We provide a focused and informed approach to art instruction which allows students to discover the expressive possibilities of new materials and techniques. Courses available for all ages and levels from budding and curious artists to seasoned fine visual artists.

These chip and candy bags were made by our Green Group art campers during week this summer. This project was a great way for our young artists to learn how to draw on a grid and work from an real life example. We’ll be doing projects like this in our and classes this fall. This week, our Green Group art campers had fun exploring the colours of candy! Our campers used cardstock, coloured pencils, and polymer clay to make these delicious looking candy sculptures. Summer art camps are now over, but fall term art classes are just a week away and we’ll be back to creating soon! Visit our website to register.

It’s week at Freehand! This is our last week of summer camp and we’re wrapping up with a celebration of colour. On Tuesday our Orange Group Art campers learned about and . We used modelling clay to make these yellow and purple complementary colour sunflower paintings. Great work, Mackenzie H, Nicolas M, Kira M, Chase M, Valentina A, and Cece B!

Last week, our week used and acrylic paint to create shadowboxes of themselves as hockey players. Aren’t these adorable?! Our final week of summer art camps starts today - we can’t wait to see what this new group of campers creates!

As we say farewell to week of camp, we couldn’t resist sharing one more project inspired by our incredible country and our art history. “Passing Comet” is a 1987 oil painting by Canadian artist Ted Harrison that was inspired by the transit of Halley’s Comet in 1986. These oil pastel and watercolour resist landscapes with collaged silhouettes were inspired by this famous painting. Great work, Zara A (Gr2), Henry M (Gr3), Noah B (Gr3), Avril D (Gr1), Alexandra S (Gr2), and Hugo G (Gr1). What a fun camp week that was!

week of art camp would not be complete without a visit to the East Coast. On the last day of camp, our young artists were inspired by Nova Scotia artist and her colourful paintings of rural Maritime life. Our campers used clay to create based on Maud Lewis’ work. These four paintings were made by Alexandra S (Gr2), Isla B (SK), Rhys S (Gr5), and Isabel K (Gr5). Great work, campers!

It’s hard to believe it, but autumn is just around the corner. Today our art campers used watercolour paint and to create these beautiful paintings of flying south over the skyline. Great work, Aiden L (Gr3), Isabel K (Gr5), Akari N (Gr3), Dekel R (Gr4), Ansel S (Gr4), and Jacob Y (Gr5). Today our art campers turned their attention northward. Our Green Group art campers were inspired by artist Ted Harrison and the striking landscapes of the Canadian territories. Using ‘s distinctive colour palette and colour blocking style, our campers made beautiful Arctic landscapes featuring an . These striking with masking were made by Rhys S (Gr5), Mariner P (Gr3), Aiden L (Gr3), Akari N (Gr3), Isabel K (Gr5), and Ben M (Gr4). Phenomenal work, everyone!

Today our art campers were inspired by the quirky, whimsical murals of Toronto-based artist and illustrator Emily May Rose. Emily is famous for her mischievous raccoon characters and her art can be found on walls, fences, and Bell-boxes all around the city. For this project, our campers used oil pastels, popsicle sticks, cardboard, plasticine, acrylic paint and paint markers to create our own mini versions of an raccoon mural. These were made by Henry M (Gr3), Hugo G (Gr1), Alexandra S (Gr2), Siena M (Gr3), Smith R (Gr2), and Noah B (Gr3). Thank you for inspiring us, !

At the turn of the 20th Century, artists in Canada began to forge an artistic identity that was distinct from European traditions. Artists such as and the took inspiration from the Canadian wilderness and developed a new style of art rooted in a deep appreciation for the majesty of the land. Today our Orange Group art campers were inspired by the painting “British Columbia Landscape” (1940) by Emily Carr. Our artists used several layers of acrylic paint to recreate this painting in their own fashion. These incredible paintings are the work of Liza C (Gr2), Avril D (Gr1), Zara A (Gr2), Adrian S (Gr2), Alexandra S (Gr2), Henry M (Gr3), Hugo G (Gr1), and Evan G (Gr2). Phenomenal work, artists: we hope you display these paintings for years to come!
