The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) is home to a community of active learners drawn from all over the globe, determined to use what we discover – through investigation, collaboration, and experience – to make our world a better place. Our campus is an integral component of Canada’s leading research-intensive university, a place where faculty contribute to cutting-edge knowledge, where the

finest students are taught by the finest professors. Upon graduation, our students have earned one of the most rigorous and respected post-secondary degrees in the world. We believe the best university learning environment combines academic excellence with meaningful engagement. This is why experiential education is one of the hallmarks of our approach to education. We strive to give students a head-start on their future by enhancing their academic studies with opportunities such as internships, co-operative learning, hands-on research, volunteerism in the community and co-curricular participation in campus life. At UTSC, we are working together to find answers to tomorrow’s most important questions. And because the search for knowledge must always be conducted in a meaningful way, our campus is continually alive with innovative programming, engaging discourse and dynamic experiences that feed our spirits and enrich our minds. This is how our scholarship contributes to a better world. Because tomorrow is created here.

Bavan has had so many meaningful moments throughout his undergraduate journey at U of T Scarborough. As he prepares to walk across the stage, he looks back on those times that shaped who he is today.

Here are some of his best tips for success:
🌟 Take advantage of U of T Scarborough research opportunities
🌟 Get involved in clubs and organizations
🌟 You don’t need to have everything figured out; put yourself out there
🌟 Don’t be afraid to reach out. These moments often lead to the most meaningful connections.
🌟 Don’t overcommit; align your time with purpose
🌟 Show up with care (and take care of yourself!)
🌟 Make the most of experiential learning opportunities

A new U of T Scarborough study is calling for more evidence-based approaches to how children are being taught to read.

Phonics is widely accepted as essential, but researchers found that how it is taught varies significantly, from the number of rules and example words used to when exception words are introduced. These differences matter because early decoding skills are one of the strongest predictors of later reading success.

Researchers suggest focusing first on the most consistent letter-sound patterns to help build a stronger foundation for learners.

Indigenous House officially opens at U of T Scarborough on Monday!

This space responds to the University of Toronto’s Answering the Call: Wecheehetowin (Cree word that means "Working Together") Final Report of the Steering Committee for the University of Toronto Response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and U of T’s 34 Calls to Action by creating a space dedicated to honouring Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing, for community, connection and learning.

Indigenous House:

• Advances truth and reconciliation and equitable access to education

• Creates a welcoming environment where Indigenous students, staff, faculty and community members can thrive

• Have a sense of belonging in a culturally safe place

This work also embodies Wâhkôhtowin (Cree for “kinship” or “everything is related”) reflecting a holistic worldview where all living things, lands, and waters are deeply interconnected and carry reciprocal responsibilities to respect and care for one another.

When science meets art 🔬🎨

Evolutionary Biology students at U of T Scarborough reimagined what they learned through creative projects, from paintings and fashion pieces to installations that turn complex ideas about evolution into visual storytelling.

Their work went beyond the classroom and into a gallery exhibition at Station Gallery in Whitby as part of Deep Time – Creative Minds, showcasing about 50 student projects. The result shows how science can also spark creativity, reflection, and self-expression.

What if farms didn’t need soil? 🪴

At U of T Scarborough, researchers are growing crops vertically, using hydroponic walls that help plants grow upward instead of outward. If it sounds space age, it kind of is. This is a completely new way of growing food.

The system recirculates water and nutrients in a closed loop, cutting water use and reducing waste. Plants grow in coconut husks under energy‑efficient LED lights.

The result? Less land, less water and fewer emissions from transporting food long distances. Read the full article: https://bit.ly/3Rivdln

Last month, U of T Scarborough, in collaboration with U of T Medicine and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, hosted Health Professionals Career Week (HPCW).

Close to fifty Grade 10–12 students—predominantly from Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities—joined us on campus and at local hospitals to explore diverse pathways in the health sciences. Through hands-on experiences like learning CPR, practicing suturing, engaging with medical simulation models, and exploring Indigenous health through movement and connection, students gained meaningful early exposure to careers in healthcare.

Programs like HPCW are opening doors—bringing together mentorship, hands-on experiences, and future opportunities for students in their own communities. To read more about the HPCW: https://bit.ly/4tB5suH
