Humber School for Writers alumna Susan Carpenter’s debut novel, Bad Advice, follows a therapist on the edge and a patient who crosses the line in a small town that won’t let her forget.

Reaching the top spot on Calgary’s Bestselling Books BPAA List and The Calgary Herald’s Bestseller List, this exploration of trust, trauma, and the fine line between helping and harming proves that in a place where everyone knows your past, one wrong move can be fatal.

"Humber has been foundational in my development, providing the spark for Bad Advice to grow into a published novel, and I am thrilled to share this milestone with the community that helped me reach it."

Susan will be participating in the June 2026 MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival’s ‘Fresh Blood: Crime Writers of Canada’s 2026 Debuts & Hot Reads’ panel.

An unexpected bill. A rent increase. A cost that simply can’t wait.

For some Humber students, these challenges can put their education at risk. The rising cost of living and recent changes to student financial aid are placing increasing pressure on students who should be focused on learning, not worrying about how they’ll afford rent, groceries, textbooks, or transportation.

Emergency bursaries help students facing urgent financial hardship cover essential expenses so they can stay in school and continue pursuing their goals.

Every gift helps students move forward with confidence — show your support today!

Service takes many forms. For Austine, it meant transitioning from a Police Captain in the Philippines to a Nurse in Canada.

Austine chose Humber to begin his next chapter in healthcare. He took the leadership skills he learned in law enforcement and pivoted to nursing, bringing his dedication to healthcare’s frontlines.

Since graduating, he has accumulated an impressive list of honours for his service in nursing, including the 2026 Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) of the Year, the King Charles III Coronation Medal, the Toronto Star Florence Nightingale Award, and the 2026 Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards.

“Beyond my workplace, I remain active in community service and advocacy, helping internationally educated nurses navigate their journey toward professional integration and success in Canada.”
His story is a reminder that nursing is as much about the heart as it is about the science.

Some people grow up knowing exactly who they’ll become. For Enxhi, she explored different paths before finding one with purpose.

That moment arrived at Humber, where a single nursing lecture didn’t just inform her, it ignited her.

Her story unfolded as she stepped into emergency care, became an educator shaping the next generation of nurses, and wrote op-eds for papers that challenged the norms and advocated for the profession she loves.

Her journey is a reminder that life doesn’t always follow a clear map, and sometimes paths are revealed at unexpected moments.

"Humber prepared me to be a nurse, and for that I will always be grateful. The Humber nursing program is rigorous, but through its challenging nature, I believe it produces the most prepared nurses."

Today, Enxhi stands as a nurse, leader, writer, and advocate whose voice is reshaping the future of healthcare in Canada.

For An’Jrue, nursing was never just a career choice but rather a calling rooted in care, connection, and community.

Humber became the place where that calling took shape. What began as a foundation in nursing grew into a decade‑long career in psychiatric care.

But his story doesn’t stop at the bedside. Driven by the gaps he witnessed in the mental health system, An’Jrue began building something new: a Mental Health Application designed to support healthcare workers, reduce stigma, and raise awareness.

Today, he also teaches Mental Health and Addiction at a private college, guiding continuing education students with the same compassion and clarity he brings to his patients.
