This summer, Munk School Master of Global Affairs student Fatima-Zahrae Tarib is completing her internship with the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C., working with the Corporate & External Relations team. She is working on a Development Finance Toolkit that breaks down the instruments the Bank uses to mobilize and scale financing, including blended finance, guarantees, and development impact bonds.

“It's been a great opportunity to see how development finance actually works behind the headlines, and sitting at the intersection of finance and communications, figuring out how to explain instruments that shape real development outcomes in ways that resonate with policymakers, donors, and the public alike,” shares Tarib.

Through her work, Fatima-Zahrae is gaining firsthand insight into how development finance can help shape real-world development outcomes, while exploring the intersection of finance, communications, and public policy.

Back to school means back to learning and at the Munk School, sometimes the classroom is halfway around the world!

Students in the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies (CEES) travel to Central Europe for an immersive learning experience, exploring Budapest and the Czech Republic through lectures, museums, guided tours and firsthand observation.

Because some of the best learning happens when you step outside the classroom and experience history, culture and politics for yourself.

Welcome to the Munk School!

As we begin a new academic year, we’re excited to welcome our students, faculty, staff, fellows and the broader Munk School community back to campus and to welcome Professor Mark Duggan as Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy.

“One of the things that drew me to this outstanding school at Canada’s flagship university is its unique ability to bring insights from rigorous academic research into conversation with policymakers, practitioners, students, and the broader public here in Canada and throughout the world,” says Professor Duggan.

As Professor Duggan begins his first year as Director, we look forward to a new year of asking challenging questions, engaging in meaningful conversations and working together to address the most pressing issues facing our world.

This summer, Munk School Master of Global Affairs student Melanie Tanabe is completing her internship with UNICEF in New York as a Humanitarian Policy Intern. As part of the Protections team, Melanie attended the Annual Debate on Children and Armed Conflict at the United Nations Security Council alongside colleagues, contributing by taking notes during the proceedings.

From attending discussions at the UN Security Council to working alongside UNICEF’s Protections team, Melanie is gaining valuable insight into humanitarian policy and the international systems working to protect children affected by conflict.

We’re proud to see Munk School students gaining hands-on experience in global affairs and humanitarian policy while applying the skills they’ve developed in the classroom.

The Lionel Gelber Prize is awarded annually to the best non-fiction book on international affairs published in English. Founded in 1989 by Canadian diplomat Lionel Gelber, the prize aims to deepen public debate on significant international issues.

This summer, Munk School Master of Global Affairs students Doris Zhu and Eric Tan are completing their internship with the Canada China Business Council (CCBC), where they are contributing in complementary roles. Doris supports event publicity and communications, while Eric works with CCBC's Western Chapter on trade mission planning, membership recruitment, and research on the Canada–China trade and investment landscape.

"Through in-person events, we have both had the chance to learn more about the issues shaping how Canadian businesses engage with China and to connect with communities working across both environments,” share Zhu and Tan.

This summer, Munk School Master of Global Affairs student Sandrine Umutesi is completing her internship with IOM Rwanda as an Innovation Financing and Sustainable Development Intern.

As part of her internship, Sandrine attended a UN Rwanda meeting, where she served as a reporter, documenting discussions and preparing a summary report that captured insights from representatives of 10 UN agencies operating in Rwanda. The experience gave her a deeper understanding of peacebuilding, sustainable development, and the power of collaboration in addressing complex global challenges.

"The meeting inspired me by showing how collaboration and global partnerships can create real change. It deepened my sense of responsibility and motivation to contribute positively to my community," shares Sandrine.

She also shared that the knowledge and skills gained during her first year of study provided a strong foundation for engaging with development challenges and innovative financing in practice.

We're proud to see Munk School students applying their research and analytical skills to support international humanitarian efforts and contribute to sustainable development around the world.

🌟 Reach Alumni Spotlight: Sydney Piggott, Munk School, University of Toronto

From strengthening food ecosystems in Ethiopia to expanding access to quality mentoring across Canada, Sydney has built a career at the intersection of social impact, partnerships, and public policy.

Sydney joined Reach in 2017 after a friend encouraged her to apply ("Thanks, Elsa!" she says). At the time, she was a Master of Global Affairs student at the Munk School and took part in field research in Ethiopia exploring barriers to addressing food insecurity.

As a Reach alum, Sydney later became the first alumni representative on the Reach Alliance Advisory Council, giving back to the community that helped shape her early professional journey. "Reach has become much more than a research experience," she shares. "It has been a community that has grown alongside me throughout my career."

Today, Sydney is Director of Strategic Partnerships & Initiatives at Mentor Canada, where she works with community organizations, governments, and post-secondary institutions to expand access to quality mentoring across Canada.

Outside of work, she loves to travel—Reach alone has taken her to three continents! She also enjoys mentoring, volunteering on nonprofit boards, and reading science fiction.
