Welcome to the University of Toronto (U of T) School of the Environment. The School of the Environment has grown from the former Centre for Environment, and is located within the Faculty of Arts and Science. The School serves as a focal point to help direct students, faculty and the community to environmental initiatives across the three campuses of the U of T. program in environmental studies an

d a B.Sc. program in environmental science, with exciting programs under development. In addition, collaborative programs are offered with departments and programs at U of T such as chemistry, geography, geology, human biology, physics, philosophy, psychology, and others. At the graduate level, interdisciplinary collaborative programs in Environmental Studies, as well as in Environment and Health, are offered in partnership with over twenty other units at U of T. In addition, distance education and certificate programs provide opportunities for professional development, as do leading-edge workshops and seminars in areas such as Environmental Finance and Carbon Finance. The School is also pleased to collaborate with other organizations, inside and outside the University, to offer opportunities for student engagement and collaborative research projects. As part of her Master of Environment and Sustainability (MES) research project Kendi Dyck traveled to Kajiado County, Kenya, to explore local experiences with the Chyulu Hills REDD+ Project, a carbon conservation initiative designed to reduce emissions while supporting environmental conservation and local livelihoods. Her research sought to understand how community members perceived the project, how they participated in it, and what questions or concerns they have about its impact on their land and daily lives.

"I want to use my privilege and education to help those who face environmental injustices. If I can make a tiny difference, even as simply as explaining what carbon is, I'm glad and feel as though my research hasn't gone to waste."

Assistant Professor Michael Classens is a co-applicant on a successful, $2.4 million SSHRC Partnership Grant.

His case study case study will bring together community-based organizations across Toronto with student-run organizations at the University of Toronto all working at the intersection of food-climate justice. The objective of the project is to explore how community-campus solidarities might facilitate shared responses to the ongoing crises of food injustice within the context of emergent climate disasters. The project will specifically focus on already-vulnerablized neighbourhoods and populations across the city.

ELM is centred on supporting student success by strengthening a sense of belonging, cultivating academic and career pathways. Your expertise and guidance as a School of the Environment alumni mentor can make a meaningful difference to the student experience while building community through forming connections with students and fellow alumni.
