Political debates are crucial for every level of elections, offering a platform for candidates to present their plans and allowing public a chance to meet with them and raise questions.

As Toronto mayoral byelection is approaching, candidates actively participating in various debates. Recently, a focused debate on the future of housing affordability in Toronto was organized by the University of Toronto, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Toronto, and the Canadian Urban Institute on June 12. Moderated by CBC journalist and TV host, Marivel Taruc; six front runners, including: Brad Bradford, Olivia Chow, Mitzie Hunter, Josh Matlow, Mark Saunders and Ana Bailão, discussed topics such as multi-unit acquisition program, home share and rent control etc.

Folks, we've got some winners in our midst!

Hearty congratulations to Centennial College Journalism graduates Erin Horrocks-Pope and Kai Gammage, and to the Toronto Observer - each was recognized by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association in its 2022 Better Newspapers Competition Awards.

Erin Horrocks-Pope took first place in the Student Feature Writing category for: Will my perfect pandemic pet boost my mental health? It's complicated.

Kai Gammage took third place for: Pretty Vacant: The Toronto punk scene's resilience in the COVID-19 pandemic

The Toronto Observer took second place for Best College/University Newspaper Website.

Centennial College journalists took to the streets with cameras in hand on election night Thursday to cover Scarborough ridings and candidates, as part of our Vote on Scarbz coverage to engage and inform first-time voters.
