The Toronto Arts Council’s Visual Artists Program: Creation provides support to visual artists who have a professional independent art practice for the creation/production of new work or the completion of works in progress. Funds are intended to cover direct costs of creation/production, and materials. Visual Arts includes drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, printmaking, performance art, installation and fine crafts and more. The Visual Artists Program does not include film or video makers: they apply to the Media Artists Program.

OCAD University students and alums are bringing original artwork and animation to YZD’s Runway Reels this fall. 🎬 🎨

Facilitated by the RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers (CEAD), the collaboration will bring artwork by community members into The Apron, YZD’s new outdoor gathering space, while an original animated short created by OCAD U animation students will premiere during the Halloween weekend. 🎃

Runway Reels runs across four weekends from Oct. 2 to 24, offering free drive-in and open-air cinema alongside art and community programming. The collaboration continues Northcrest Developments' long-term vision to transform the former Downsview Airport lands into a leading cultural destination.

Starting Sept. 18, an underused site on Toronto’s waterfront will be transformed into a temporary public space and cultural destination.

Over three weekends, Marina Quay West will become Public Pier, offering free day-to-night experiences featuring music, food and beverage, dancing, vendor shops, public art, and Silo Nights—a landmark projection program on the Canada Malting Silos.

Public Pier is a collaborative public-realm pilot exploring how creative placemaking and cultural experiences can bring people to the site, support culture and public life, and help shape its evolution into a future public park and cultural destination.

The project is created in collaboration between The Bentway, Harbourfront Centre, OCAD University and the Waterfront BIA, with the Toronto Port Authority as lead sponsor.

Together, we’re advancing a shared vision for Toronto’s waterfront and demonstrating how cross-sector partnerships can create welcoming, vibrant, and meaningful places for the city and its communities.

📷 Analogue cameras are becoming harder to find, and many OCAD U students struggle to afford them on top of other supplies. If you have a 35mm SLR camera in good working order that's no longer being used, consider giving it a second life in the hands of an emerging photographer. Working order means aperture & shutter speeds are working (the light meter is a bonus, if it works as well, but not necessary!).

📸Working order cameras may be eligible for a charitable tax receipt.

🏆 Congratulations to OCAD University alum Crystal Mowry on receiving the 2026 The Hnatyshyn Foundation Mid-Career Award for Curatorial Excellence!

The prestigious peer-recognition celebrates excellence, innovation and outstanding curatorial achievement. Mowry has previously been shortlisted for the award, making this recognition a testament to her contributions to the field.

Mowry is the director of programs at the MacKenzie Art Gallery and previously served as a curator at The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and the City of Toronto. Her work often explores the tension between perceived authenticity and troubled forms of representation. As a curator operating primarily within public art museums, she treats her role as equal parts co-conspirator and translator, drawing on roots in studio practice to support artists in the development and subsequent touring of new projects.

Mowry shares this year’s Hnatyshyn Foundation honours with Vancouver-based artist Howie Tsui, who received the Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Visual Arts.

OCAD University is pleased to announce the honorary doctorate recipients for 2026.

This year’s recipients include arts visionary and advocate RitaDavies-c-m; entrepreneur and digital trailblazer Joshua Greer; award-winning journalist, author and filmmaker Tanya Talaga; and distinguished scholar and philanthropist Ash K. Prakash.

The honorary doctorate recipients will address more than 800 graduands during two Convocation ceremonies at Roy Thomson Hall on June 19.
