We are pleased to introduce this year’s pwaaginaawin/powwow Eagle Staff Carrier, Jesse Wente! This is a role of honour and leadership that signifies the commencement of our gathering and celebration of Indigenous culture. 🪶

Friday, September 11, 2026. This year’s theme is Abinoojinyag Gchi-piitendaagziwag | Every Child Matters. 🧡

Jesse Wente is a husband and father, as well as an award-winning writer and speaker. Born and raised in Toronto, his family comes from Chicago and Genaabaajing Anishinaabek and he is an off-reserve member of the Serpent River First Nation. Jesse spent more than two decades as a columnist for CBC Radio’s Metro Morning. Jesse worked with the Toronto International Film Festival as a curator for more than a decade and he was the founding director of the Indigenous Screen Office. Jesse has served on numerous boards, including ImagineNative, Native Earth, Massey Hall/Roy Thompson Hall and is the first Indigenous person to serve as Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts. Jesse’s books include the bestselling and award winning, Unreconciled, the children’s book Danger Eagle, and Tough Lies, which is out October 20. Jesse was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto in June. Jesse is currently serving as Storyteller in Residence at Toronto Metropolitan University.

The 2026 TMU Pwaaganigaawin (pow wow) team is excited to announce that the community feast will be catered by Chef Tawnya Brant. 👩🏽‍🍳🥙🥗

Chef Tawnya Brant is a Mohawk Nation, Turtle Clan citizen of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory and the chef-owner of Yawékon Foods, an Indigenous catering and educational company rooted in Haudenosaunee traditional and contemporary foodways. She is the host of APTN’s One Dish One Spoon, with season two airing in May 2026, and a Top Chef Canada Season 10 finalist.

With over 30 years in the restaurant industry, Chef Tawnya has been featured on CTV’s The Good Stuff with Mary Berg, The Social, Milk Masters 2024, and APTN In Focus, and on the covers of Food & Drink Canada and Menu Magazine. Through her work, she continues to share Indigenous food knowledge across North America while honoring Haudenosaunee culinary and agricultural traditions.
