Reminder! Join us this Wednesday for an exciting evening of astronomy at the Allan I. Carswell Observatory! We are hosting an observatory tour where guests will have a chance to explore the inside of our incredible 1m and 60cm telescope domes.
Bonus: If the skies are clear, we’ll set up our 1m telescope for live observing!

Happy Space Science Saturday! Did you know? A team of astronomers at the University of Missouri has published a paper (cited below) describing current IMF assumptions and proposing a way to get better estimates of the ratio of large and small stars in a galaxy. It all goes back to the environment in which those stars formed and can give astronomers a more accurate estimate of a galaxy's mass, its age, and evolution. “One of astronomy’s basic assumptions may be oversimplified,” said Charles Steinhardt, an astronomy professor and co-author of the team's paper. “Other galaxies weren’t breaking the laws of physics — we were measuring them with the wrong yardstick.”

Seneca Smith is a communicator, teacher, and lover of science. With experience in both physics and data science, Seneca believes in finding the story within the data to make the obscure relatable and the mundane magical. As the vice-president of the Barbados Astronomical Society, Seneca is passionate about ensuring that everyone has access to the wonders of astronomy, regardless of their background. Currently a secondary school physics teacher, Seneca uses their passions for exploration, photography and making music to continue learning and teaching outside the classroom whenever possible.
