Hello everyone! Please see below for an important volunteer opportunity relating to Afghanistan for law students and lawyers, originally posted by the Junior Refugee and Immigration Lawyers Network (JRILN Canada):
___________
Volunteers needed!
Many members of this group have been looking for ways to help respond to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the following:
- assess cases to see what pathways for immigration Afghan citizens may qualify for, and make referrals to organizations and volunteer lawyers. This includes people inside and outside of Afghanistan, and may also include people in Canada who have temporary or precarious/no status in Canada
- case work for Afghan citizens, including: preparing forms, gathering evidence, and helping to submit applications
You must be a lawyer licensed to practice in Canada and insured to assist with case assessment and case work. Law students and licensing candidates may be paired with a volunteer lawyer.
There are also other volunteer opportunities that are open to students and licensing candidates, such as:
- helping to draft, edit, and update plain language materials on Canadian immigration programs for Afghan citizens
- helping to build a database of resources in Canada for Afghan, including organizations that provide legal information and advice, settlement agencies, etc
- recruiting volunteer lawyers, translators, and interpreters
- translation and interpretation (primarily Dari and Pashto, but other regional languages such as Urdu, Balochi, Uzbek, Turkmen, Hazaragi may also be useful).
