In 2008, the Centre for Jewish Studies was created to recognize and build on these remarkable achievements. Today the Centre offers courses at the undergraduate and gradu

ate levels in archeology, art, history, languages, literature, performance, philosophy, political science, religion, and sociology. Judaism is one of the fountainheads of Western culture. In addition, students from a wide range of backgrounds choose Jewish Studies because the Centre's courses and programs:
• Foster an understanding of the past through a highly critical engagement with Jewish and other traditions
• Explain the possibilities of cultural renewal in the face of rapid change
• Explore the challenges and opportunities of minorities within majority cultures

The ATCJS is thrilled to open applications now for the Mitchell J. Gerstein Distinguished Visiting Artist Program in Social Justice and Jewish Life" for 2026-27! Working artists working in a broad range of creative interpretations of contemporary Jewish life are eligible to apply. The program is open to professionals working in areas of the visual, musical, performing, and literary arts.

The program seeks to support the creation and production of new artistic work and to provide insight into the process of conceptualizing and producing creative work. The artist will work with a scholarly interdisciplinary community at the Centre and within an artistic academic community in a partnering humanities units. Artists in Residence may be asked to teach a course; share their practice through public-facing events, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students; and participate in community life on and off campus.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for yesterday’s amazing event: “Memories in Focus: Pinchas Gutter in Conversation with Doris Bergen”.

We are so grateful to Pinchas Gutter for his decades of work, talent, dedication, and wisdom as an educator which have left an indelible impact on everyone who has heard him speak about his experiences before, during, and after the Holocaust and has read his memoir published by the program.

Congratulations to Mr. Gutter for being awarded the Wolfe Student Impact Prize in Holocaust Studies this year!

is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shlomo Zuckier as the Igor Kaplan Postdoctoral Fellow in Christian-Jewish Relations effective September 1, 2025. This is a joint appointment with the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Toronto (ATCJS).

Dr. Zuckier’s PhD thesis entitled, “Flesh and Blood: The Reception of Biblical Sacrifice in Selected Talmudic Sources in Comparative Context” was awarded by Yale University in 2020. He brings with him rich academic experiences having held research fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton; University of Notre Dame; and McGill University. Dr. Zuckier has an impressive scholarly publication record in aspects of both Ancient and Modern Judaism and Jewish-Christian relations.

As the Igor Kaplan Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Zuckier will be part of both the ATCSJ and the TST communities, as well as the wider University of Toronto community. Dr. Zuckier’s office will be located at TST’s member college, Regis St. Michael's Faculty of Theology. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Zuckier to Toronto in the Fall.

This competitive program invites applications from active artists engaged in a broad range of creative interpretations of contemporary Jewish life. Eligible applicants include professionals working in the visual, musical, performing, and literary arts.
