We invite all community members, learners, and NEC staff to gather with us in the Fireside Lounge for Lighting the Fires. Who will benefit – teachers, advocates, indigenous organizations, grassroots and more, each Wednesday evening.

From a cultural stewardship lens we will come together for conversation, learning, reflection, and connection, beginning with teachings and discussions focusing on the local Host Nations’ Protocols on Welcoming.

We raise our hands in deep respect as we honour the life and legacy of Joan Amshen Phillip.

Joan Amshen Phillip was a strong Indigenous leader, advocate, and changemaker. Joan was səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and made history as only the second First Nations woman to serve as an MLA in British Columbia.

Throughout her life, Joan Phillip dedicated herself to justice, human rights, and the well-being of Indigenous Peoples and communities. Her voice, leadership, and advocacy touched many lives and helped create a stronger path forward for future generations.

The granddaughter of Chief Dan George, Joan also stood alongside her husband, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip for decades in service to community and in advocating for Indigenous rights.

We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, community, constituents and all those whose lives she touched.

We raise our hands in gratitude for her life, her leadership and the legacy she leaves behind.

Roxanne began her Family and Community Counselling Certificate and Diploma journey at NEC, where she found a learning environment rooted in culture, connection, and community.

At NEC, Indigenous perspectives are woven into the learning experience, creating a space where students can embrace their identity, celebrate their culture, and grow with confidence.

Through her journey, Roxanne has discovered the strength in her story and the confidence to pursue her dreams while staying connected to who she is.

The Indigenous Adult Basic Education (IABE) Online Pilot is now accepting applications for Fall 2026, offering Indigenous learners across BC the opportunity to upgrade select Grade 10-12 English and First Nations Studies courses through live, synchronous online classes.

Rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing and NEC’s culturally grounded learning environment, the pilot brings NEC learning directly to communities across the province.
