For World Environment Day, we’re highlighting how experiential learning can help businesses take action on climate.

The BMO SME Climate Clinic at UBC Sauder’s Centre for Climate and Business Solutions brings together students, businesses, and sustainability-focused learning to to help organizations address real-world climate challenges.

Through the program, students work directly with businesses to better understand emissions, supply chains, and climate-related risks while gaining hands-on experience in climate-focused business solutions.

To date, the clinic has engaged 174 students and supported 46 companies, creating meaningful learning opportunities while helping businesses move from awareness to action.

Two people can take the same climate‑friendly action — recycling, eating less meat or biking to work — and generate the same environmental results.

But a new UBC Sauder study by Dr. Katherine White finds they may perceive the impact of those actions very differently depending on their political beliefs, shaping whether they choose to act at all.

Meet Celine Agatha, a UBC Sauder MBA student who took part in the Global Immersion Experience (GIE) in Berlin. 🇩🇪

For Celine, the experience was a deep dive into one of Europe's most dynamic business landscapes - exploring how utilities and real estate intersect within Germany's energy transition.

Working alongside inno2grid, she gained firsthand insight into how global strategy moves from the boardroom into real-world implementation, sharpening her perspective on sustainable business in a rapidly evolving industry.

UBC Sauder staff recently participated in a Professional Growth session – "Thinking on Your Feet" led by Andrew Chen. The session explored how spontaneity, active listening, and collaboration can strengthen communication in dynamic environments.

Through a series of interactive exercises, participants saw how small shifts in language can completely change the direction of a conversation. One of the many takeaways from the session was the contrast between “yes, but…” and “yes, and…” - a simple exercise that showed how quickly communication can either shut ideas down or create space for creativity, connection, and momentum.

Andrew, an Adjunct Faculty member at UBC Sauder School of Business, brings an experiential approach to the classroom, using hands-on activities to help participants build practical skills they can immediately apply in professional settings.

During the session, he emphasized that improvisation tools are not just for performers. In fast-moving workplaces, leaders need to observe carefully, adapt quickly, communicate clearly, and collaborate in real time.

The experience reminded participants that thinking on your feet is not about having all the answers. It is about listening well, staying present, and building from what is in front of you.
