Congratulations to the Allard Law professors who were named UBC Faculty Wellbeing Champions! Professors Emma Cunliffe, Jon Festinger, KC, Carol Liao and Salima Samnani, KC and Adjunct Professor Amin Sabzevari were honoured at a special event earlier this month.

Dr. Carol Liao was asked to speak at the event, and reflected on what it meant to her, and her fellow honourees, to be nominated by their students:

“Teaching is, at its core, a relationship built on trust, vulnerability, and shared effort. To be seen in that very special professor-student relationship, and to be recognized for it, is deeply meaningful to me and for all of us professors in the room… My students challenge me, they inspire me, they expand the way I think about law, justice, and community. Being a teacher is mutually sustaining. I gain so much from the energy, curiosity, and integrity that my students bring into the classroom. Being even a small part of their journeys is something I feel so utterly grateful for.”
– Dr. Carol Liao

In September 1983, Tomas Yebes was wrongfully convicted of murdering his two sons. His nephew, Allard Law alum Tarek Elneweihi, always knew he was innocent.

“All my life I told people about my uncle’s story and how I wanted to do something about it,” says Elneweihi. He was five years old when he decided to become a lawyer to help free his uncle. Together with the UBC Innocence Project, Elneweihi helped clear his uncle's name.

For many law students, having the opportunity to support the work of the UBC Innocence Project is one of the most meaningful aspects of their law school experience. Once accepted to the Project, students review case files from the original investigation through to the final appeal, with guidance from experienced supervising lawyers.

“Our clients have told me that even if little legal progress is made, it’s life-changing just to know that there are people who care and who are working to help them,” says UBC Innocence Project student Emma Zhang.

On April 8, UBC Giving Day, we’re raising funds to support the UBC Innocence Project. Your donation on April 8 will help unlock $50,000 in challenges and matching funds, made possible by the Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation.
