The UBC Debating Society competes for the University of British Columbia in the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate, or CUSID. Our organization in its seminal form is older than the University itself, being formally established in 1906 as part of the McGill University College of B.C. We have firmly established ourselves as one of the best debating organizations in the country an
d among the top 40 in the world. We recently hosted the World debate championship in 2006. While competition is a significant part of what we do, we recognize the individual and social benefits of debate and try to encourage its practice throughout the University and the lower mainland. In this effort, we coach and coordinate high school debate across the region, and run workshops like Debate 101 across the campus. Further, our organization is open to all students and we put an enourmous amount of effort into training students to learn how to debate and to give them practice. Our goal is to make people good debaters and nothing less. Our meetings for the 2023-2024 school year are hosted in BUCH B316!
