Just in time for Halloween, Vancouver Film School welcomes Leo Award-winner Karen Lam to our campus from Oct. 2-4 for “Inside the Craft: Making a Horror Scene.” 🎬 Includes an AMA on horror moviemaking.

This three-day, hands-on In-Production Bootcamp is your chance to collaborate with an award-winning filmmaker on a short horror scene for your portfolio.

✅ LEARN FROM THE BEST: Work directly with award-winning filmmaker Karen Lam, director of Bring It On: Cheer or Die, and TV writer (Van Helsing, Ghost Wars).
✅ FROM IDEA TO PRODUCTION: Write, act in, or design makeup for a short horror scene.
✅ GET REAL ON-SET EXPERIENCE: Collaborate with filmmakers, actors, writers, and makeup artists to bring a horror scene to life on set.

VFS Student Film ‘Popping the Question’ Wins Best Picture at Colorado Lakeside Youth Film Festival 🏆

A VFS student film is off to a winning start on the festival circuit. Popping the Question, a collaborative production created by students from VFS’s Acting, Writing, and Film Production programs, recently took home Best Picture at the inaugural Colorado Lakeside Youth Film Festival (CLYFF) in Denver.

The film was among 20 selections screened at the festival, which brought together emerging filmmakers and audiences for a program celebrating new voices in cinema. Following its VFS production, Popping the Question has now begun its festival journey, with submissions to additional festivals underway.

The Best Picture win marks an exciting first accolade for the film and the students behind it, and a chance to bring their work from our Production Centre to audiences worldwide.

Vancouver Film School is deeply saddened by the passing of long time School of Animation Instructor Keith Blackmore. For 25 years, Keith inspired generations of VFS students through his passion for the history, art, and artists of animation and visual effects. He taught History of Animation & VFX to students in Classical Animation and 3D Animation & VFX, as well as Media Studies in Animation Concept Art.

Keith’s impact extended well beyond the classroom. As a Producer and Conference Chairman for SPARK CG, he helped connect students, artists, and industry leaders while sharing his seemingly endless knowledge and enthusiasm for the art form he loved.

“Keith was driven to connecting people to stories and the artists who created them,” says Colin Giles, Head of Animation at VFS. “He leaves our community better connected because of his dedication.”

We remember Keith with gratitude for the knowledge he shared, the connections he fostered, and the many lives he touched. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, students, and the wider animation community. Keith will be deeply missed.
