How do popular podcasts influence what young men hear and believe about trans people?

Join Royal Roads University for “Broadcasting hate: The role of popular podcasts in anti 2SLGBTQIA+ rhetoric” with Dr. Jaigris Hodson, RRU professor and Canada Research Chair in Digital Misinformation, Polarization and Anti-Social Media.

Drawing on her research into trans-critical disinformation on The Joe Rogan Experience, Hodson will explore how podcasts can spread rhetoric that threatens gender and sexual minorities in Canada, the influence these messages have on young men, and what we can do to counter them.

As part of a lesson on personality and leadership, Associate Faculty member Sandy Walker challenged these Master of Business Administration students, here for their first residency, with what seemed like a simple task: form small groups, choose a leader and take a 20-minute stroll around campus.

There was just one catch: no talking, texting or other forms of communication.

What followed was anything but a walk in the park. The exercise sparked lessons about leadership, communication, decision-making and working together.

How do we move social policy beyond cold statistics? By listening to lived experiences through art.

A new project led by Royal Roads is partnering with the Community Social Planning Council of Greater Victoria and Nova Arts Hub to explore how artistic expression can complement traditional data on homelessness.

"When research is created with a community rather than simply about it, art becomes a way of listening," says Shelley Cook, executive director of the Community Social Planning Council.

Funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), this initiative will culminate in a public exhibition in Victoria, sharing artwork created by participants who are guiding the research agenda themselves.
