A message from Camosun College President Sherri Bell
March 22, 2020

Dear friends and supporters,

I wanted to provide you with an update of the actions that Camosun College is taking to protect the health and well-being of our community. We are committed to doing our best to provide ongoing support and services to our students, employees and you, our alumni and donors, during this challenging and complex time. We have worked intensively in the past ten days to ensure we have a functioning institution during these difficult times for our students.

As global concerns surrounding COVID-19 continue to grow, we are taking proactive steps to maintain and enhance social distancing and prioritize the health and safety of our community, including students, employees and campus visitors. To that end, in the past week, we have transitioned studies and student services from face-to-face to alternative methods of delivery to promote social distancing. All work-related travel is suspended. Starting March 18, employees who were able to, started working from home.

Many of our students are now facing significant economic challenges as part-time and full-time work disappears for them and their families. Last fall we reached out to you, our alumni and donors to support the Erasing Barriers campaign. We are currently using these funds to help any of our students who will be facing challenges in the days and weeks to come. Now more than ever, our students need our support. If you are able, I am asking you for your support, small or large, so that we can provide the assistance our students need now.

Camosun alum and residential school survivor Eddy Charlie helped kickstart the local movement at the college while he was a student. He has taken his story to the municipal and provincial level. Listen to his story here, and please take time honour Eddy and other Indigenous people who were impacted by the residential school system.

Orange Shirt Day is held annually on September 30th, a time of year when Indigenous children were removed from their homes and taken to residential schools. ...

We're excited that Camosun will have free menstrual products available for students (and everyone!) in the Lansdowne library washrooms! This pilot project was spearheaded by a Camosun alumna and current library employee.

Camosun will provide free menstrual products in women’s and men’s washrooms on campus starting in September! The products will be available in the Library and Learning Commons washrooms on Lansdowne campus.

“Students are front of mind because many experience financial hardship,” says librarian Robbyn Lanning. “The menstrual products, however, are for everyone who comes to campus. They’re for anyone who works here, studies here, or visits as a guest.”

Phillip Yee, a Camosun College alum who graduated from the medical radiography program in 2016, tells us about a day on the job as an x-ray technologist.

“When you take an x-ray, you don’t just put the body part in the machine and press a button,” he says. “You have to get the room ready, prepare the patient, and make sure you’re clear about what you’re supposed to x-ray. You have to balance what the doctors want and what the patient can do, so you need to get very creative about how to get the images.”
