With the majority of our classes now done for the academic year, it's always a pleasure to welcome recruitment-focused visitors into our spaces to get a better sense of the remarkable facilities we offer our students!

This was a group of international high-school counsellors who took a tour of UVic School of Music & University of Victoria Phoenix Theatre recently. From our 3 theatres + backstage studios plus recording studio & recital hall, all were mightily impressed by our extensive options for students!

is excited to be sponsoring PODIUM 2026, Canada’s national bilingual choral Conference and Festival! Co-chaired by Music professorAdam Con and presented by Choral Canada, this multi-day celebration runs from May 14-17 at UVic and will bring together 400 delegates from across the country and 3,000 performing singers, all of whom are passionate about group singing.

“It’s a celebration of the best of the best of what we do in Canada,” says Con told the . “We like to think that Victoria has more choirs, disproportionate to the population, than any other city . . . there’s a choir for every taste or flavour. That’s a good thing.”

But our involvement goes beyond organizing and hosting, as we’ve got Music students in the mix too: Sadie Karlsson is Podium’s volunteer coordinator, Dominicand Bree Ann Bartle-Clar are performing with the National Youth Choir of Canada, our Vocal Jazz Ensemble is doing a pop-up concert in the MacLaurin building’s A-wing (12:30pm Sunday, May 17), and we have two music education students assisting with the event’s technology. Also, 2024 Distinguished Alumna Carrie Tennant is directing a performance of the Vancouver Youth Choir, and a number of alumni are performing in the various featured ensembles.

Held every two years since 1982, PODIUM 2026 aims to ignite meaningful dialogue within the global choral community. Through offerings both on-site and online, we will showcase new music, bold ideas and exciting opportunities for collective singing, through participatory workshops and massed singing events. Key themes will look at the role of the choral arts in topics such as social justice, climate change action, health and wellness, diversity and inclusion.

“PODIUM 2026 is more than a national gathering — it is a moment of reflection, connection and renewal for Canada’s collective singing community,” Con told .

At a time when connection and collective expression matter more than ever, PODIUM 2026 invites us all to raise our voices, not only in harmony, but in hope. In song, we find strength. In community, we find courage. And together, we shape what’s next.

We were honoured to attend the ceremony & recital marking the 5th anniversary of the Music for Veterans Project at Government House on April 28, where double UVic School of Music UVic Alumni Emily Armour honoured the latest group of piano students who have composed original pieces in recognition of Canadian military veterans past & present — which was also covered in the Times Colonist. It was delightful that Emily was able to have a moment to reconnect with mentor & retired Music professor Bruce Vogt as well!

It's always sad to lose a student from a pre-existing serious illness before they're able to graduate, but we're glad to be able to support the family of late University of Victoria, Visual Arts student Keith Baxter in hosting this May 4-8 memorial exhibit in his honour.

Keith sadly passed away in Jan 2026 from complications of hemophilia, leaving behind a vast body of work at his Ministry of Casual Living studio.

Please come out to UVic's Visual Arts building this week to honour the life & art of this talented artist, friend & student. There'll be a guest book for you to share your thoughts & memories for the family.

Congratulations to Neworld Theatre on winning the 2026 PACT Green Award for the verbatim play "Eyes of the Beast: Climate Disaster Stories", created in partnership with the Climate Disaster Project based here at the University of Victoria.

Presented by the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, this national award celebrates theatre companies, organizations & individuals responding to the climate crisis in creative, meaningful & impactful ways.

Through first-person climate disaster testimonies brought to the stage, "Eyes of the Beast" — which originally debuted at University of Victoria Phoenix Theatre in 2024 — invites audiences to witness, reflect, connect & imagine action together.

We're so proud of the continuing work of the Climate Disaster Project —which is based out of UVic Writing — & of the creative work of our UVic Alumni behind this project & Neworld Theatre itself. Congratulations to all the artists, collaborators, survivors & community members who made this work possible!

Congratulations to the cast & creative team on the opening of the latest Belfry Theatre mainstage production "Casey and Diana" (running now through May 17), which offers a great example of how the Belfry & University of Victoria Fine Arts faculty continue to work together.

As part of her MFA coursework, current University of Victoria Phoenix Theatre graduate student Amanda Lisman (right) is the UVic Director Intern for the show alongside production director (& outgoing artistic director) Michael Shamata.

A quick glimpse at the program also reveals a number of Fine Arts alumni including featured actor Celine Stubel, sessional instructor/mentor Jen Swan & Hannah Abbey on stage management, Carolyn Moon as the venue technician, MFA alum Alan Brodie on lighting design & UVic School of Music grad Tobin Stokes as composer and sound designer. And award-winning "Casey and Diana" playwright Nick Green is also a former Theatre student!

Currently celebrating their 50th anniversary, the Belfry is one of our community partners with whom we continue to have a dynamic relationship. Not only has it been home to Fine Arts alumni like former artistic director Glynis Leyshon & longtime director of marketing/ communications Mark Dusseault, but it also regularly welcomes our students & alumni into their landmark heritage location in Fernwood.

We also welcome a rotating series of professional talent to share their experience on campus through the continuing Belfry@UVic speaker series in our Theatre department!

Fantastic to see "Embers & the Giants" by University of Victoria, Visual Arts professor Kelly Richardson on the really big IMAX screen that it was made for as part of the XL Outer Worlds festival! (Originally commissioned back in 2018 as 1 of 5 short films for the 50th anniversary of the IMAX camera, it took until April 2026 for the series to arrive in Victoria for a one-day-only showing.)

"In my film, what you first assume are fireflies are actually tiny drones programmed to mimic fireflies: what I’m trying to suggest is that perhaps we’ll reach a time when we have to amplify the spectacle of nature in order to convince us of its worth,” Richardson explained at the screening.

Filmed in the forests of the Pacheedaht First Nation near Avatar Grove, Richardson is passionate about preserving these old-growth entities.

"It takes many millennia to develop the biological complexity of these forests, and when we log them everything in the landscape dies — above and below the ground. And the forests we plant in place of them never acquire that biological complexity again. For me, it’s about appreciating everything in the landscape, not just the trees.”

Outer Worlds was originally funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and produced by PUBLIC: Art / Culture / Ideas.
