For Go By Bike week, we are celebrating Camosun employees that love to ride their bike to work and play! Wendy Coldwell (Operations Assistant, Culinary Arts) shares her story.

“I bike to work for a variety of reasons! I enjoy the health benefits of cycling, and the freedom to cruise almost anywhere my legs can take me. I love exploring by bike, finding new routes, and inspiring others to ride. My commute is relatively short, so I often create a longer route to and from work, especially when the weather is perfect.”

She adds, “I am usually training for a bigger adventure, like last year’s trip to Thailand or next month’s Victoria to Port Hardy trip. (Cruising back through the Sunshine Coast!).

For Wendy, the added advantage of not being a part of the traffic congestion is hard to pass up!

Go By Bike week ends on June 6, but the benefits last a lifetime!

Researchers from Camosun College and the University of Victoria have been awarded a grant to support the preservation of Northwest Coast Indigenous carving traditions through an adaptive robotic system that collaborates with master carvers.

Carey Newman (University of Victoria), Richard Gale (Camosun College), and Keivan Ahmadi (University of Victoria) received funding from the New Frontiers in Research Fund Exploration Stream, a program designed to support high-risk high-reward interdisciplinary research that goes beyond disciplinary boundaries.

Carey Newman, master carver and primary investigator for the grant explains that carving has long been taught through hands-on mentorship within families and communities, but challenges like climate change, limited access to old growth, urbanization, and legacies of colonialism makes preservation of this cultural practice more important than ever. This project uses innovative digital tools to engage youth and help sustain carving knowledge.

This is the latest in a long-term and ongoing collaboration between Camosun College, the University of Victoria, and Indigenous artists.
