A beautiful lesson on Sumi-e  墨絵 (Japanese brush painting) today at the University of Victora by PWFC's very own Michael Kenji Abe (Mike)!

🖌 Michael began painting in 1988 while living in Japan. His annual Nenga jo 年賀状 (Japanese New Year’s cards) have depicted the animals of the zodiac since 1999.

2026 is the Year of the Horse.🐎

Diversifying Accountability: Exploring Nikkei Struggles for Memory and Redress Around the Globe

"Dear colleagues,

We, the editors, seek proposals from prospective authors for chapters in an edited scholarly book, titled provisionally, Diversifying Accountability: Exploring Nikkei Struggles for Memory and Redress Around the Globe. The volume editors are members of Past Wrongs, Future Choices, a global partnership focused on scholarship, archival work, education policy research, and museum exhibits.  The partnership works to understand and engage the diverse histories and community struggles for justice of diasporic Japanese populations, often known as Nikkei, who suffered dispossession, incarceration, exclusion, exile, and more in Allied countries during the Second World War.....We seek proposals that explore any of these diverse meanings of accountability in relation to the Second World War injustices and Nikkei struggles for memory and justice...

Submission:
Questions can be sent to Michael Abe at [email protected] and will be forwarded to the team for a reply.
Please send a one-page, single-spaced chapter proposal to Michael Abe at [email protected] by November 15, 2025, for prior review.

Timeline:
The results of the proposal selection will be sent to the authors by November 2025. Chapter drafts should be submitted by November 2026. The collaborators will meet for a workshop of vibrant peer-to-peer discussions in Curitiba, Brazil, in the fall of 2027. The papers will be submitted to a major academic publisher for publication in 2028

The Shape of Loss by Louise Noguchi

Opening performance Nuit Blanche
October 4, 7 pm EDT– October 5, 7 am EDT (overnight) | Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre | 6 Sakura Way, Toronto, ON

🗓Exhibition: October 4, 2025 – January 23, 2026
📍Location: Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Toronto

During Nuit Blanche, artist Louise Noguchi will reproduce the hull of each Japanese Canadian fishing boat confiscated during WWII on the gallery walls, with the support of announcers, narrators, and collaborators. This 12-hour live installation makes visible the profound losses of livelihood, property, and dignity experienced by Japanese Canadians. Tea will be served, and visitors are invited to stay, reflect, and bear witness.

The drawn hulls and a time-lapse video of the performance will remain on view until January 23, 2026.

These positions work in partnership with Past Wrongs, Future Choices (PWFC), PWFC's Archive Cluster, and the University of Victoria’s Humanities Computing and Media Centre (HCMC)

The Position:
Your work will be to translate English text into Portuguese or Japanese, and Portuguese or Japanese text into English. You will translate:
• primarily English-language historical documents from the 1940s, collected by Spotlight researchers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan and the United States;
• some Japanese or Portuguese historical documents into English;
• some English translations of Japanese or Portuguese documents;
• contextual essays in English about the Spotlight themes.

❗️Required Qualifications:
• Native-level fluency in Japanese or Portuguese
• Business-level fluency in English
• General facility with computers (Google Suite, Microsoft Word)
• Strong communication and writing skills
• Detail-oriented and meticulous work habits

✅️Asset Qualifications
• Experience with translation (especially of historical texts)
• Experience with XML markup and/or willingness to learn TEI-XML
• Knowledge of three project languages (English, Japanese and Portuguese)
• Member of the Japanese diaspora/Nikkei community
• Evidence of engagement with the history of Nikkei communities
• Humanities background (preferably History, Pacific and Asian Studies, English, Linguistics or languages, Libraries and Archives)

Those selected for an interview will be asked to translate a short sample text as part of the screening process.
