Gustavson BCom students helped community members file more than 150 free tax returns through the Gustavson Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

The student-led clinic supported community members, newcomers to Canada and UVic students, with more than 80% of clients receiving refunds.

For many, that support came with an unexpected bonus: money back they weren’t expecting.

“We had some very happy people at the tax clinic over the past couple of months,” says Courtney Haddock, a 3rd year BCom student who volunteered with the clinic. “Many weren’t expecting to get anything back, so it was a pleasant surprise for them and for the students helping them file.”

The program has been running since 2016, giving Gustavson students a way to build practical skills while offering free tax support to people in the community.

“When you’re a student, even $200 or $500 can make a big difference,” says Courtney. “It made our team happy to know we could help in that way.”

The role did not exist before he made the case for it.

Brant Chlebowski, MBA ’23 has always been drawn to the ocean, a connection that has shaped his studies, early career and the work he does today.

After completing his MBA Gustavson, he began to approach opportunities differently, focusing less on fitting into existing roles and more on where he could add value. That shift led Brant to pitch and build a role at a company developing uncrewed ocean vessels for clients like the Canadian Armed Forces and Coastal First Nations.

Read how experience in startups, research and sustainable innovation came together to shape how Brant builds opportunity today.

You don’t have to choose between a career in finance and making a real-world impact. 🌎

UVic’s Impact Investing Hub is opening the door to a different kind of finance. One where success is measured not only by returns, but by the social and environmental change it helps create.

Running August 20–27, the Impact Investing Summer School gives students hands-on experience in impact investing under Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET’s) Business and Finance Innovation research area.

💬 “if we want capital to support low-carbon, resilient and equitable economies, we need to train future investors to recognize and support the full range of opportunities driving that transition: from community-led energy projects to clean tech startups and climate-focused innovation.” - Basma Majerbi, Impact Investing Hub founder and Peter B. Gustavson School of Business professor.

📆 Interested in impact investing? Enroll by May 15th.

Imagine creating a venture in just 12 weeks and walking away with interest from investors.

That’s what happens in Startup Studio, an interdisciplinary, AI-enabled course at UVic that brings together BCom and Engineering students to build ventures from day one.

Rapid prototyping, testing with users, iterating fast and pitching to mentors, investors and the local tech community is the daily rhythm.

Startup Studio is intentionally designed at the intersection of engineering and business, showing how collaboration, curiosity and applied learning turn ideas into real-world impact.

But how do students go from 'day one' to investor interest in just 90 days? It takes a mix of cross-faculty brainpower and a heavy dose of generative AI.

See how we’re partnering with UVic Engineering and Computer Science to create a new kind of learning environment. 👇

It started as a two-week challenge. No capital, no portfolio and no guarantee anyone would say yes.

For recent BCom graduate Hiroko Mahoney and co-founder Aiden Bamford, that meant knocking on doors in downtown Victoria and asking anyway.

The first door said yes. They followed up. They kept showing up.

A year later, their class project has become a full-time business and their first client is still with them. What started as an assignment is now Download Media.

In The Power of the Ask, Hiroko shares how asking, following up and staying open led to mentorship, partnership and a very different path after graduation.

Join third-year BCom student Mia on a recent field trip 🌿

Recently, students from COM 362 Business and Sustainability spent the day at the Scottish Community Centre for a day exploring Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing, alongside the Songhees Nation.
Through shared experiences, conversation and hands-on learning, the day invited students to reflect on how different perspectives shape the way we understand business, community and sustainability.

Students were invited to sit with a different way of seeing and to consider how that shapes the choices we make in business and beyond.

Gustavson researchers Brock and Claudia Smith have spent decades studying what drives people to become entrepreneurs and how those skills can be developed. Kidovate is where that research comes to life.

This past weekend, hundreds of young entrepreneurs put their ideas to the test at the Victoria market. Next up: Nanaimo.

Kidovate’s next market day is this Saturday, April 18 at North Town Centre Mall from 10–4.

Come out, support these young entrepreneurs and see the future of business in action!

A website can count your steps, but it can’t cheer when you show up.

A deepfake can look flawless, but one disclosure choice can make it feel honest or deceptive.

And a company can sound “green” while emissions quietly climb.

Gustavson researchers are always digging into big questions and we’ve gathered the latest findings including examining emissions reporting vs reality, deepfakes and disclosure timing and what it takes to support health behaviour change online.

Fresh Findings is our roundup of newly published Gustavson research, translated into the key questions, the human stakes and the “so what” for the world beyond campus.
