Eight University of Waterloo researchers have been elected as Fellows and College Members of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), one of the country’s highest academic honours. The appointments recognize exceptional contributions to research, scholarship and innovation across a wide range of disciplines, from global governance and public health to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and quantum neurobiology.

“Congratulations to Waterloo's new Royal Society of Canada Fellows and new Royal Society of Canada College Member on this outstanding achievement,” says Charmaine Dean, Vice-President, Research & International. “Recognition from the Royal Society of Canada marks an exceptional milestone for Canada’s leading researchers and highlights not only the strength of their research programs but also the significant contributions they make to Canada’s research ecosystem and beyond.”

The University of Waterloo is excited to welcome Dr. James Wolffsohn from the U.K. as a Government of Canada Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair in Health Innovation. Wolffsohn is joining the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science and will continue his work advancing technology-driven solutions for earlier detection, personalized treatment, and equitable access to eye care.

Wolffsohn will officially join Waterloo on October 1, 2026, and establish a research program that spans the full innovation pipeline, from discovery and research through to commercialization, while engaging Waterloo students at every stage.

💧 What’s really in a drop of water? At the EIT building, Nathan checked out an orbitrap mass spectrometer.
 
This instrument can identify what’s hiding in a tiny water sample by measuring molecules with incredible accuracy, helping researchers detect PFAS, microplastics, and other environmental contaminants.
