Last week, we had the privilege of bringing together over 100 donors, alumni, students and faculty at the School of Accounting and Finance 2026 Alumni Excellence Gala — an evening celebrating achievement, leadership and our incredible community that gives back and pays it forward.

From alumni making their mark at the highest levels of their fields, to students representing Waterloo in competition against the best and brightest universities across the globe, the night was a powerful reminder of what we're capable of together. ✨

What does it take to run a student-led study trip across Germany? ✈️ 🇩🇪

For the students in SAF's Winter 2026 International Study Course (AFM 334), the answer involved 400+ cold emails, a last-minute private bus charter, and a whole lot of cross-team problem-solving.

Behind every company visit, meal reservation and travel schedule — from Adidas and BMW to the European Central Bank — was a team of students working together to make the experience a success, all while navigating real-world curveballs along the way.

Curiosity can take you further than you think 🔍

Through the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) Fellowship Program, Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) student Emma discovered a passion for research and the bigger questions behind accounting — and found a mentor who gave her the autonomy to explore them.

Working as a research assistant with professor Tim Bauer, Emma gained hands-on experience in audit experimental research, developed skills in data analysis and experimental design, and gradually moved from supporting projects to proposing her own ideas.

💡 Her advice to first-years? Early in your career, the cost of trying something different is low — so explore broadly, and pay attention to what genuinely motivates you.

For the third time in a decade, students from the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) have claimed the global title at the CFA Institute Research Challenge — the world's most prestigious student finance competition.

Competing against more than 8,000 students from 1,200 universities across 160 markets, the SAF team beat finalists from California State University Fullerton, Peking University, Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Ljubljana to take home the grand prize of $10,000 USD.

With wins in 2016, 2024 and now 2026, the University of Waterloo stands alone as Canada's only global champion ever to win and ties the University of Sydney for the most global final appearances of any school in the competition's 20-year history.

The team includes Jei Raman Gnaneswaran, Alicia Wen and Michael Huang, students in the Accounting and Financial Management program, and Quynh-Anh Le, a student in the Biotech/CPA program and Ethan Fraser, a Sustainability and Financial Management student.

Last week, CPA Ontario recognized the newest CFE National Honour Roll recipients at a special celebration event.

We’re incredibly proud to see so many School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) graduates among this group who earned the prestigious distinction of being top 1% performers among first-time writers.

Out of just 22 Ontario writers on the Honour Roll, SEVEN were SAF Master of Accounting (MAcc) alumni — representing nearly one-third of the province’s top performers! This remarkable achievement is a testament to the hard work, resilience and the strong technical foundation built through our MAcc program.

Congratulations once again to Emma, Michelle, Irene, Sarah, Rachel, Helen and Rebekah on this outstanding accomplishment. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next. 🎉
