Unparalleled in size and strength, the Faculty of Mathematics is home to four distinct academic departments (applied mathematics, combinatorics and optimization, pure mathematics, and statistics and actuarial science) and the David R. Each unit offers programs at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral level. With more than 8000 students, 240 full-time professors, and 500 courses in mathematics, statistics and computer science, the Faculty is a powerhouse of discovery and innovation.

Congratulations to Changbao Wu, Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, for receiving the 2026 Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada, the Society's highest honour!

Professor Wu is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to survey methodology. His research has advanced the theory and practice of model calibration, empirical likelihood methods for complex survey data, and the analysis of non-probability samples. His work has been published in leading statistical journals, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Biometrika, and the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society.

🎓 After graduating from the CEMC's MMT program in 2023, Laurent Gerard Fountaine, shares “In hindsight, I feel I should have pursued the MMT ten years ago.” Today, he feels like he has developed a deeper understanding of math and is now able to be a better educator to his students, showing them the importance of lifelong learning.

💡The Master of Mathematics for Teachers (MMT) program is an online, part-time graduate program designed for secondary-school mathematics educators.

Earlier this month we were happy to host Waterloo Chapter’s of Technovation Girls’ Regional Pitch Event!

In this free four-month program, participants ages 8 to 18 work in teams to develop an app that tackles a community-facing problem related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Pitch Event is a chance for participants to celebrate everything they accomplished during their season while also serving as the quarterfinals for the Technovation Global Challenge.
