In celebration of National Indigenous History Month, JAADDE has invited Maclane Cardinal, recipient of the 2025 Guiding the Journey Indigenous Educator Award, to share his perspectives and practices on embracing Indigenous knowledge through land-based learning on June 8.

Title: Embracing Indigenous Knowledge: Perspectives and Practices in Land Based Education
Speaker: Maclane Cardinal (M.Ed.), Indigenous Studies and Theatre Arts Teacher, Pembina Trails Collegiate

Drawing from my M.Ed. thesis, ongoing research, and reflexive teaching practice, I share my lived experiences as an Indigenous teacher and teacher researcher. My work examines how Indigenous-led land-based learning meaningfully engages both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students while fostering relational forms of learning. I discuss collaborations with communities and students that center responsibility, relationality, and reciprocity within land based programs. I invite continued dialogue on how Indigenous knowledge systems and traditions can be authentically and sustainably integrated into K–12 education.

🎓 CLASS OF 2026 STUDENT SERIES: Cameron Dyck, B.Ed. (Access Program)

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀?
In my time in the Access Program, I greatly appreciated the smaller class sizes, which allowed me to build stronger relationships with my teachers. What I appreciated most, however, were the resources and support services the program provided. The free tutoring was especially helpful whenever I needed extra support with my coursework.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?
One thing I love about teaching is the opportunities it provides. Last year, it gave me the chance to teach in the UK for four months, and next year, it has allowed me to accept a teaching position in Melbourne, Australia.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲?
For the rest of this academic year, I have a term position teaching Grade 1 and providing literary support for grades 3 to 5, but then I am off on my next adventure.

𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲?
My mom, who is a teaching assistant, is working on her own Bachelor of Education degree!

🎓 CLASS OF 2026 STUDENT SERIES: Mathieu Cornborough, B.Ed. gradua

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?
When we went on a mini "field trip" with my "Teaching French" class at the start of my second term to Direction des ressources éducatives françaises in St. Boniface, it was super useful. La DREF is full of teaching resources for French teachers to access and rent.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲?
I hope to be a French Immersion teacher in the Seine River School Division. I've done a lot of subbing for that school division, and I've really enjoyed my time there. Being able to coach a football team for a school on top of all that would be the dream.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁/𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗕.𝗘𝗱. 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀?
Enjoy it and make the most of it. Talk to your profs and don't be afraid to ask them questions or e-mail them for extra resources. The professors in this faculty are second to none. Talk with other students, get to know them in group projects, and you may make lifelong friends.

We were honoured to welcome students from the University of Manitoba’s Post Secondary Club (PSC) to the Faculty of Education for a special on-campus experience!

During their visit, students took part in a hands-on art activity centred on identity, strength, and community. Through creating symbolic artwork, they reflected on their own personal and community strengths—like resilience, kindness, culture, and connection. Each piece came together to form a powerful collaborative collage, showing how individual stories contribute to a strong and vibrant community. 🎨

The energy, creativity, and thoughtfulness students brought to the activity made the day truly special. We’re so grateful to have shared this space of learning, reflection, and connection. Thank you to the PSC and UM Indigenous Recruitment Team for partnering with us, as well as FOE staff, faculty, instructors, and students who organized and led the activities.

🎓 CLASS OF 2026 STUDENT SERIES: Hayden Brander, B.Ed.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿?
I always felt comfortable working in settings with kids around. After my first week or so at my first practicum, I knew I was in the right place. The relationships and connections you make in a school, and seeing how those relationships can make a kid's day better, is so rewarding.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀?
During my class-based course, my professor had a great impact on my two years in the program. He showed me how to be a great teacher through his knowledge of educational expertise and how much he cares for all of his students.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁/𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗕.𝗘𝗱. 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀?
Don't be afraid to try new things in your practicum experiences, and then discuss it with your classmates and faculty members. The program was truly a great learning experience for me. Also, have fun!! It goes by so fast, enjoy it!

We are proud to see this meaningful partnership in action. Together with Pembina Trails School Division, we’re helping high school students explore the path to teaching through hands-on, real-world experiences—from campus visits and micro-teaching to classroom job shadowing.

This initiative is inspiring the next generation of educators and giving them the confidence to see themselves in the profession.

What does it feel like to be a teacher?

This spring, students stepped into our Faculty of Education to find out—joining classes, connecting with our community, and leading their own mini lessons along the way.

By moving beyond the classroom and into real experiences, they’re starting to see where a future in education could take them.
