The Winnipeg Holistic Expressive Arts Therapy (WHEAT) Institute offers training in the therapeutic use of the arts in a gorgeous lakeside retreat immersion and Online classes. Through WHEAT's programs, students learn how the universal language of art allows healing, growth and justice to emerge from even the smallest brushstrokes, movements and words. WHEAT's holistic approach to education incorpo

rates connections with history, nature, culture, and respect for Indigenous Ways of Knowing into its settings, philosophies, and curriculum. WHEAT is the only school of its kind to provide Indigenous language courses within all its programs, and was the first to offer a fully Indigenized Art and Expressive Arts Therapy program in Canada. WHEAT is pleased to offer Online classes through Zoom and in-person immersions at Painted Sky Studio on Lake Manitoba. The cozy, artsy essence of Painted Sky Studio inspires creativity and a sense of being at home.

Chi miigwetch Tasha Beeds for the beautiful images from water day on Lake Manitoba. I love seeing all the students in relationship, even reverie, with the water; and there was some serious ice flow still going on out there May long. Look at the spaciousness of this classroom, and imagine the learning going on.

July 19 - 20, 2026 at Painted Sky Studio in St. Laurent, Manitoba

Available for drop-in registration or as part of our 2026 Expressive Arts Therapy Diploma, Dual Diploma, or Creative and Expressive Arts Certificate cohort programs.

Train as both an Art Therapist and Expressive Arts Therapist through WHEAT Institute’s Dual Art and Expressive Arts Therapy Diploma Program.

This unique 2.5-year program combines all required coursework in both disciplines, preparing graduates to support individuals and groups through diverse arts-based psychotherapy approaches.

Program highlights include:

• Two in-person summer immersions and one fall and spring immersion
• Online weekday evening and weekend classes
• 800 practicum hours, including 500 direct client contact hours
• Ongoing individual/dyadic and group supervision
• Academic and writing support for a culminating research project

Graduates are prepared to establish a private practice, facilitate individual and group therapy, and work within agencies and community programs supporting diverse populations. Graduates are also eligible to apply for professional membership with both the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) and Ontario Expressive Arts Therapy Association (OEATA).

We are currently accepting applications for our July 2026 cohort. Space is limited, and applications will be accepted until the end of May.
