The Axworthy Distinguished Lecture Series on Social Justice and the Public Good invites front-ranking researchers, social commentators and political leaders to the University of Winnipeg to deliver free lectures open to the public. Axworthy Distinguished Lecturers will bring interdisciplinary perspectives on social justice issues involving gender, religion and secularism, Indigeneity, language, et

hnicity and race, ecology, and economy. Axworthy Lectures coincide with Institutes delivered by CLASS, a network of University of Winnipeg faculty members engaged in interdisciplinary research concerning secularism and secularization from perspectives across the liberal arts. CLASS researchers also interrogate the ways in which secularism affects the liberal arts themselves. This lecture series has been established in recognition of Dr. Axworthy’s commitment to the public good, to social justice, and to accessibility at the University of Winnipeg. Both as President of the University of Winnipeg from 2004-14. and through his distinguished political career, Dr. Axworthy's efforts have centered largely on humanitarian and social justice issues—work recognized by a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize nomination. During his remarkable tenure as President at the University of Winnipeg, he undertook many initiatives concerned with the public good at the local, national and international level, further entrenching the University of Winnipeg as a bastion of social justice education and activism.
