The for this month is !

This image, part of the University Relations Communication collection, shows an unknown student engaging in the long tradition of cooking in residence. Today you might use an electric griddle or air fryer, but he is using a portable gas stove indoors (which can't be very safe!)

Come visit the UW Archives if you want to view more from our photo collections.

Today is Victoria Day, a Canadian holiday since around 1845. The day is for Queen Victoria who was the monarch of the United Kingdom during Canada's confederation.

The holiday is also the informal start of summer, so enjoy the outdoors like these Winnipeg Central Park goers from 1962!

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). It is held to draw attention to violence and discrimination experienced by people based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It was first observed on May 17th, 2005.

The date was chosen as it was on that day in 1990 that the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. Originally focused on homophobia, the scope of the event has expanded since; including transphobia in 2009 and biphobia in 2015.

The included photo is from a collection donated by Connie Merasty in 2019. She is a Swampy Cree and Two-Spirit person from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation and has worked with various organizations in a career involving education, human rights activism, dancing, writing, and acting.
