🎓UM Law Class of 2026: Josh Gandier

Josh received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Winnipeg (major in accounting, minor in Indigenous studies). While at the U of W, he played for the Wesmen Men’s basketball team. He decided to go to law school to increase his capacity to serve Indigenous nations, organizations, and peoples. He will be articling at Hall & Larocque in Winnipeg.

❓What I wish I knew before I started law school: The importance of building and investing in relationships while at Robson Hall. The friendships I formed at Robson Hall helped me get through my studies, and I look forward to staying close with them as we navigate the next steps of our legal careers.

❓Favourite memory of Robson Hall: My favourite memories at Robson Hall would have to be law league curling Fridays or weekly intermural basketball games with Robson Hall’s Case Closers.

❓Advice for new law students or someone considering coming to Robson Hall: Seek out mentorships and friendships. The support gained from these relationships will help you navigate what you would like to do with your legal education, while also supporting you in some of the most challenging years of your university studies.

🎓UM Law Class of 2026: Stef

Stef completed both an undergraduate degree and MA in Sociology, with his thesis exploring how immigrant youth use hip hop culture to foster inclusion and belonging within Canadian society. Before Robson Hall, Stef worked in the immigrant services sector with a focus on delivering arts-based education programs. As you might tell from the photo, Stef has also dedicated much of his life to artistic practice. In law school, Stef took part in the Northern Externship where he worked and lived in Thompson, Manitoba. Stef will be articling at Stringam Law in Calgary.

âť“ Favourite law school class: Evidence with Professor Trask was a game changer for me. Learning the rules and tactics of evidence made the law feel like a strategic chess match, and it shaped how I approached access to justice work. I applied many of those lessons while working in northern communities, especially when advocating for bail and speaking directly with Crown attorneys.

❓ What I wish I knew before I started law school: Don’t worry too much about the curve! Stay on top of your readings, put in the study time, and you’ll be okay.

❓ Advice for new law students or someone considering coming to Robson Hall: Be yourself. Don’t feel pressured to fit into a particular group or follow the same path as everyone else. Focus on becoming lovely in your own skin, carving your own path and staying true to your core values.

🎓UM Law Class of 2026: Anika Friesen

Anika completed her undergrad at the University of Manitoba, receiving Bachelor of Arts (major in Psychology, minoring in Economics). After receiving her degree, she worked at Pitblado LLP as a legal assistant before taking the LSAT and applying for law school. A few weeks before law school started, she found out that she and her husband were expecting their first child which she says was scary but that she would not have changed a thing about her law school journey. Anika will be articling with Legal Aid Manitoba in their designated youth criminal office.

âť“ Favourite law school class: Mental Health and Criminal Law. During one of the classes we went to the Manitoba Youth Centre. It was here that I realized I really wanted to work in youth criminal defence and it solidified a lot of decisions I made for my final year of law school and articling.

âť“ What I wish I knew before I started law school: That I completely needed to change how I study. Studying for law school exams was a huge learning curve that took time, but I got there in the end. If you can develop good study habits early on in law school, it will go a long way.

âť“ Favourite memory of Robson Hall: My favourite memories include attending the Black Law Students' Association conferences. These were opportunities to visit and network with individuals that I would not have otherwise had the chance to meet.

âť“ Advice for new law students or someone considering coming to Robson Hall: Have a good support system in place and remember that you have to take care of yourself. Yes, grades are important, but you come first.

🎓UM Law Class of 2026: Jessie Canard

Jessie graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Business and Administration in 2017 before living life as a full-time artist. She came to law school as a mature student, saying it was an interesting transition and one of the hardest things she has done but totally worth it. In her second year of law school, she created an incredible mural at Robson Hall titled “Turtle Island” which depicts the turtle from the Seven Sacred Grandfather teachings, embodying the importance of truth and grounded in Indigenous legal traditions. Jessie will be taking a gap year to create art, attend ceremonies, and article starting in 2027.

❓What I wish I knew before I started law school: There is nothing I wish I had known or been told before coming to law school because I wanted to come knowing nothing. I came here with an open mind and curiosity about the Canadian legal world.

❓Favourite law school class: The law class I loved most was my environmental law course. Learning about the concept of natural entities, such as rivers and lakes, becoming their own legal person gives me hope that the rights of nature will be respected more seriously, since our environment supports life for all living things. I think it's cool that they could have their own voice.

❓Favourite memory of Robson Hall: There isn't one law school memory that was my favourite, but I love all my memories of doing fun and thoughtful things with the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association crew.

❓Advice for new law students or someone considering coming to Robson Hall: Get out of your comfort zone and try new things. Also, the counselling services the school provides are worth using.

🎓UM Law Class of 2026: Kaitlyn Clarke

Kaitlyn wanted to be a lawyer for as long as she can remember, particularly a criminal defence lawyer, so much of her path to law school was shaped around that goal. Prior to law school, she completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Manitoba (double major in criminology and political studies). What initially drew her to law was the truth-seeking nature of the justice system, but over time she became especially motivated to address the injustices Indigenous peoples face in the criminal justice system and to use her position as a Métis woman to help amplify voices that are often left unheard. She will be articling with Legal Aid Manitoba in Winnipeg.

âť“ Favourite memory of Robson Hall: I have so many favourite memories from Robson Hall, but one that really stands out is participating in the Gale Cup Moot. It was a lot of work between writing (and rewriting) the factum and practicing twice a week at the Court of Appeal, but getting to compete in Toronto made all the hard work feel worth it. Beyond the competition itself, the best part was having such a great team to work with throughout the process.

âť“ Favourite law school class: The UM Community Law Centre externship because it offered such a diverse experience. In our weekly lectures we learned practical information about the court process, file management, and articling. In the clinical work, I had the opportunity to manage my own criminal defence and prison law files, assist on bigger criminal files, and make connections with lawyers. I really enjoyed the work and the community - the UMCLC really confirmed for me that I am in the right profession.

âť“ Advice for new law students or someone considering coming to Robson Hall: My biggest piece of advice for new or incoming law students is to find your community. Law school can be challenging, and having people around you to support you through difficult courses and life outside of school makes a huge difference. One of the things I appreciate most about Robson Hall and the Manitoba legal community more broadly is how strongly they value mentorship and community, people genuinely want to help you succeed, and over time you really do find your people.
