Our hallways are full of students once more.

Today, CMU welcomed students back to campus with a joyful Opening Convocation, new friendships at the Welcome Fair, delicious food at the Community BBQ, and inspiring performances at the Student Council Coffee House.

Money affects nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Yet it is often one of the hardest things to talk about, especially in these times of rising costs and economic uncertainty.

At this special Face2Face event, "Money and the Cost of Living: Building Financial Confidence Together," Dr. Jerry Buckland, CMU Vice-President Academic and Professor of Economics and International Development Studies, will lead a panel on how honest conversations about money can reduce shame, build confidence, and help people make informed decisions.

Buckland will be joined by Jesse Dollimont (CMU '16), member of a Calgary-based women's money club, Venaika Jean, current CMU Redekop School of Business student, and Joel Schlesinger, journalist and regular Winnipeg Free Press contributor on business and finance.

"Does it matter? Do you care? Do they care?"

These are the questions at the heart of David Balzer's teaching philosophy at CMU. Drawing from his experience as a radio producer, Balzer, Associate Professor of Communications and Media, engages his classes as a radio host would talk to their audience. He makes sure that what he is teaching matters to the world, matters to him, and matters to his students.

"I hope students understand that I love people and that I love God and that their voice matters," says Balzer. "Those things coming together for me is what I want to offer them."

Balzer's inspiring approach earned him the 2022 Kay and Lorne Dick Teaching Excellence Award, a testament to the exceptional teaching at CMU.

"Any time I hear about a former student that's leading some kind of action or is engaged in political things... that's success for me."

Those are the words of Jodi Dueck-Read, Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution Studies and Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU). Through her workshop-style classes that draw on her work experience in Latin America, Dueck-Read has encouraged students to think deeply about their studies and apply what they've learned to the real-world. Her dedication to her students earned Dueck-Read the 2023 Kay and Lorne Dick Teaching Award, an honour that celebrates exceptional teaching at CMU.

At CMU, learning prepares students for real-world success by going beyond the classroom.

Just ask Melanie Giesbrecht, a Communications and Media student who is turning her learning into career experience. Through her Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) placement at Golden West Broadcasting, Giesbrecht has found new opportunities in journalism and media, thanks to the skills she discovered at CMU.

“I am actively recalling myself sitting in that classroom and what I was hearing as I'm going about what I'm doing in my work,” she says.

CMU faculty strive to create opportunities for those who need them most. Just ask Stephanie Stobbe, Professor of Business and Conflict and Resolution Studies, who is helping displaced people access education.

Stobbe is helping lead a $2.5 million research initiative that will broaden opportunities for people in Canada with lived experience of forced migration to pursue postsecondary education, engage in research, and build careers.

“I think this project is highly innovative," says Stobbe. "What we want to do is really to contribute to research and transformation of displaced and marginalized individuals."
