Congratulations to the full author team, including Dan Jenkins, Katharina Ledermann, Chantal Martin-Soelch, Tanya Tandon, and Dany Laure Wadji, for their newly published review article in Neuropsychobiology. This review proposes a new research pathway to better understand the links between childhood maltreatment and somatic symptoms in adulthood.
The review outlines a new research pathway for studying the relationship between childhood maltreatment and somatic symptoms in adulthood. It emphasizes that, although childhood maltreatment has been associated with later bodily symptoms such as pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal difficulties, and neurological complaints, important questions remain unanswered. In particular, the authors highlight the need to better distinguish between different subtypes of childhood maltreatment and to move beyond narrow categories of medically unexplained or functional symptoms. They recommend adopting standardized definitions of childhood maltreatment, using the full ICD-11 range of bodily symptom codes, and considering cultural and situational factors that may shape symptom expression. By setting out these directions, the article provides a framework for future systematic reviews and meta-analyses, with the aim of strengthening biopsychosocial research and improving diagnostic and clinical approaches.
A huge thank you to all authors and collaborators for this important contribution.
