It was a pleasure to welcome Shimaa Adel Heikal to EPFL during her visit for a scientific conference.
Shimaa has just successfully defended her PhD, marking an important milestone in a research journey with the potential to transform dementia research in Africa.
As part of the , she led groundbreaking work contributing to the Egyptian Dementia Network ( ) — the first national dementia research registry in an Arab African country. By combining clinical, biological and demographic data, the project is helping uncover new biomarkers for the early detection of dementia while building a national research infrastructure that will support future discoveries and improve patient care.
Beyond celebrating this remarkable achievement, her visit was also a reminder of what the 100 PhDs for Africa initiative is about: building a vibrant community of researchers who remain connected, exchange ideas, support one another, and contribute to strengthening scientific excellence across the African continent.

Ce fut un plaisir d’accueillir Shimaa Adel Heikal à l’EPFL à l’occasion de sa visite pour une conférence scientifique.
Shimaa vient de soutenir avec succès sa thèse de doctorat, marquant ainsi une étape importante dans un parcours de recherche susceptible de transformer la recherche sur la démence en Afrique.
Dans le cadre de l’initiative , elle a mené des travaux novateurs qui ont contribué à la mise en place de l’Egyptian Dementia Network ( ) — le premier registre national de recherche sur la démence dans un pays arabo-africain. En combinant des données cliniques, biologiques et démographiques, ce projet aide à découvrir de nouveaux biomarqueurs pour le dépistage précoce de la démence, tout en mettant en place une infrastructure de recherche nationale qui soutiendra les futures découvertes et améliorera la prise en charge des patients.
Au-delà de la célébration de cette remarquable réussite, sa visite a également rappelé l’essence même de l’initiative « 100 PhDs for Africa » : construire une communauté dynamique de chercheurs qui restent en lien, échangent des idées, se soutiennent mutuellement et contribuent à renforcer l’excellence scientifique à travers le continent africain.
