Designed for students, or designed for the convenience of adults?
When Carla Dabau joined ISSH, she had this very question in mind, which forms the basis of her upcoming book, Designing Intentional Classrooms.
What was her very first mission on campus? Transforming her own Grade 5 classroom into a living case study for inclusive, intentional learning environments.
It wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about reimagining the purpose of learning spaces. By treating the physical room as the 'third teacher', every desk arrangement, seating option, and layout sent an intentional message to her students: You belong here. You are capable. This space is yours.
At ISSH, we believe that our physical environment should be as dynamic and forward-thinking as our IB PYP curriculum. Carla’s Grade 5 classroom was just the beginning, and it has already sparked an inspiring, school-wide conversation about how we design spaces for our students.
