Writing Research for Writing Practice
How can findings from writing research be effectively applied in practice? What role do empirical studies, theoretical models, and new methods play in writing instruction, text assessment, and professional development?
At the SIG Writing Conference 2026 at the ZHAW School of Applied Linguistics, more than 200 researchers from 30 countries gathered in Winterthur to explore these questions and to strengthen the dialogue between research and practice.
👉🏻 Under the theme “Writing Research for Writing Practice”, the conference highlighted how empirical studies, theoretical models and new methodological approaches can be applied in writing instruction, assessment and professional development. Keynotes addressed evidence-based writing instruction in schools, the role of large language models and AI in writing research, and the importance of writing fluency for sustainable learning processes.
A particularly rich and diverse program reflected the dynamism of the field:
🔹Two keynote speeches and the Hayes Award Lecture
🔹An extensive academic program featuring eight parallel sessions, including symposia, presentations, posters, roundtables and demonstrations
🔹The SIG Writing Business Meeting, serving as an important forum for exchange within the community
Beyond the academic program, the conference also offered numerous opportunities for international exchange, networking and informal dialogue across disciplines and countries.
