In modern warfare, a smartphone can connect you to your family and become a weapon at the same time.

📱 UZH media specialist Roman Horbyk researches how mobile phones have transformed war. Smartphones can control drones, reveal enemy positions and bring events from the front line directly into everyday family life.

🇺🇦 Horbyk’s research is closely connected to his own experience. He grew up in Kyiv and now divides his time between Ukraine, Sweden and Switzerland. His work explores disinformation, propaganda, media and warfare.

💬 “During the Cold War, the KGB manufactured elaborate and high-quality counterfeits, but today’s propaganda relies on quantity rather than quality,” he says.

High school students, people in their gap years and others who are interested in studying at UZH came to Zurich from across Switzerland and informed themselves about the over 60 different Bachelor study programs we offer.

Warum ändern Menschen ihre Namen? Weshalb werden Orte und Dinge umbenannt? Und was bewirken solche Umbenennungen? Das Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich ist auf der Suche nach einem neuen Namen. Mit der Ausstellung «Neubenennen – Menschen, Dinge, Orte» macht es diesen Prozess zum Ausgangspunkt für einen ethnologischen Blick auf Praktiken des Benennens und Neubenennens weltweit.

Die Ausstellung führt unterschiedliche Erfahrungen und Perspektiven zusammen und macht sichtbar, wie eng Namen mit Identität, Zugehörigkeit und gesellschaftlicher Macht verbunden sind. Fragen in den Saaltexten und interaktive Stationen laden die Besucher:innen ein, über Beweggründe für und Folgen von Namensänderungen nachzudenken – und darüber, wie das Völkerkundemuseum künftig heissen könnte.

A single unexplained particle interaction could bring us one step closer to understanding 85% of the matter in our universe.

🌌 The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment has recorded its most compelling hint of dark matter to date. The signal cannot currently be explained by any known phenomenon. But one event is not enough to claim a discovery: more data are needed to determine what researchers have detected.

UZH physicist Bjoern Penning and his team are helping to answer that question. Their contributions range from operating a detector system that nearly doubles LZ's sensitivity to dark matter to reconstructing, modeling and analyzing data. Penning also helped lead the research group whose work resulted in the latest findings.

UZH researchers have developed a novel therapy for multiple sclerosis that is designed to stop the misguided immune response without suppressing the immune system as a whole.

An initial clinical trial shows that the approach is safe and well tolerated. In addition, the demonstrated mechanisms of action are highly promising. The principle could also be applied for treating other autoimmune diseases.

“After more than two decades of development work, we’ve now cleared the first clinical hurdle to enable us to deliver the therapy to patients,” says Roland Martin from UZH’s Institute of Experimental Immunology.

However, the rest of the clinical development work is very costly and can no longer be conducted solely in an academic environment. This is why the researchers have set up the biotech company Cellerys. A forthcoming trial will investigate the clinical efficacy of the therapy once the required funding has been secured.

At Scientifica 2026, a record-breaking 40,000 visitors explored the work of more than 1,500 researchers, students and start-ups from the University of Zurich and ETH Zürich.

🔎 For nine days, the science festival transformed campuses and locations across Stadt Zürich and Dübendorf into places of discovery. More than 70 additional events across the city brought research even closer to the public. The result: countless encounters, new perspectives and a shared fascination with research.

After 35 years in the USA, the world-famous Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony is moving to Europe for the very first time 🎉

On 3 September 2026, the 36th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony will take place in Zurich: complete with brilliant ideas and unusual discoveries.

🌟 The ceremony honors achievements that make people laugh, then think. It celebrates science that surprises us, challenges assumptions and sparks curiosity far beyond academia.

🇨🇭 The move to Zurich is made possible through a collaboration between the University of Zurich and institutions of the ETH Domain. Together, we are bringing one of the world’s most unconventional science event to Switzerland.
