A glimpse into studying Computer Science at ETH Zurich

On 2 and 3 September, prospective students visited ETH Zurich for the Study Information Days. At the Department of Computer Science, they had the opportunity to learn more about our study programmes, meet students and alumni, and discover current research.

Dr Felix Friedrich introduced the Bachelor’s programme in Computer Science and gave an overview of what students can expect during their studies and the career opportunities afterwards. Professor Kenny Paterson gave insights into secure messaging and the cryptography behind it, while Professor Ana Klimovic introduced students to the systems that power today’s cloud computing and AI applications.
Our alumni Severin Kistler, Charlotte Knierim, Tomas Dikk, Tobias Buner, Tamara Gini and Guy Lüthi shared their experiences after graduation. They also discussed how AI is changing their work, where they already use it, what it does well and where its limitations lie. One point came through clearly: AI is changing the work of computer scientists, but their expertise remains essential.
At our stand, visitors could also meet Digital Einstein and experience how AI, digital humans and interactive characters come together.

What does it take to build a rover for Mars? 🤖

For computer science student Alex Vance, it takes more than code. It takes teamwork, interdisciplinary collaboration and a willingness to learn something new.

As part of ETH Zürich’s student-run CRATER Project, Alex is helping develop a Mars rover that will compete at the European Rover Challenge 2026 in Krakow this week. Their work includes overhauling the rover’s operating system, developing a web interface and helping solve technical challenges ranging from network topology to error protection.

Working alongside students from more than 10 departments has also changed how Alex thinks about computer science: “I’m particularly fascinated by the link between software and mechanics.”

Each year, the ETH Student Summer Research Fellowship offers students from around the world a unique opportunity: They get to spend two months at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zürich and follow their own projects inside a research group.

From cybersecurity to bioinformatics, from Natural Language processing to cryptography – the research topics are as varied as the participants’ background. But as Daniel from Spain puts it: “Despite our different cultures, we’re very similar”. 🌍

Erwin Engeler, a pioneer of computer science at ETH Zürich, passed away on 28 July 2026 at the age of 96.

He joined the then Computer Science Group at ETH Zurich as a Full Professor in 1972. In this role, he played a pivotal part in establishing our discipline at ETH.

In 1973, he submitted a proposal to the school board on behalf of the group to formally transform it into the Institute of Computer Science.

With the establishment of the institute, the term ‘computer science’ was officially adopted at ETH Zurich.

🎉 Congratulations to Professors Peter Müller and Zhendong Su, and Professor Emeritus Bertrand Meyer on being elected to the inaugural ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Academy!

They are among 80 individuals worldwide recognised for their lasting contributions to software engineering through research, practice and teaching. Their election highlights the impact of their work across programming languages, software engineering, compilers, computer security and the development of reliable, high-quality software systems.

The inaugural class was announced as part of ACM SIGSOFT's 50th anniversary celebrations at FSE 2026 in Montreal.

A well-deserved recognition of their exceptional contributions to software engineering. Congratulations! 👏

Congratulations to Professor David Basin, Professor Cas Cremers, Dr Benedikt Schmidt and Dr Simon Meier on receiving a Test-of-Time Award at the IEEE Computer Security Foundations Symposium (CSF'26)! 🎉

Their 2012 paper has had a lasting impact on the formal verification of cryptographic protocols, laying the foundations for advances that continue to shape security research today. The award recognises work of outstanding and enduring significance – and this year, their paper was selected as one of only two honoured from the 659 papers published at CSF(W) up to 2026.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition! 👏

We are delighted to share that Professor Ana Klimovic and Professor Siyu Tang have been promoted to Associate Professors of Computer Science at ETH Zürich. 🎉

Professor Ana Klimovic is advancing the future of cloud and AI infrastructure by developing more efficient and user-friendly systems and architectures. Her work, including the “Dandelion” project, is helping shape the next generation of computing.

Professor Siyu Tang has earned international recognition for her pioneering research on human motion estimation, avatar creation and motion synthesis. Her work is driving new possibilities in augmented reality, robotics and digital humans.

These promotions recognise two exceptional researchers whose work is pushing the boundaries of computer science and creating real-world impact.
