At Shanghai Jiao Tong University, some stories go beyond age, time, and borders.

Dr. Lim Hariyanto Wijaya Sarwo, a senior alumnus from Indonesia, dreamed of returning to China to study when he was only 17. Years later, after achieving success in his career, he returned to campus and earned his MBA from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2000. In 2005, at the age of 77, he received his doctoral degree, creating an inspiring SJTU story of passion, perseverance, and lifelong learning.

He also turned his deep affection for SJTU into action by donating to support the construction of a dormitory for international students on the Xuhui Campus, helping create a warm home for students from around the world.

As SJTU celebrates its 130th anniversary, let us look back on Dr. Lim’s SJTU moments and feel the spirit of generations of SJTUers connecting with the world and moving forward with the times.

At Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Hamza found a place for innovation—and the courage to keep exploring.

Hamza Boukili, from France and Morocco, is a teacher at SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology. When he first arrived at SJTU, he was deeply impressed by the university’s—and Shanghai’s—strong support and enthusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship. This atmosphere encouraged him to move beyond teaching and research, and to further explore entrepreneurial practices and the broader possibilities of technology-driven development.

From participating in the Xuhui District Innovation Talent Summit to receiving his foreigner’s permanent residence card and becoming a “new Shanghainese,” Hamza’s SJTU journey has continued to grow, connecting him more deeply with the city.

The School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University brought together young creatives from Ecole BRASSART École BRASSART and multiple Chinese universities for a 14-day adventure where AI met cultural creativity, bringing the energy and making this collaboration shine! 🤝

At Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Safa turned his study experience into a story of entrepreneurship, connection, and empowerment.

Md Nurus Safa from Bangladesh is a 2017 PhD student at SJTU. Inspired by the university’s strong entrepreneurial spirit, he and his partners founded a natural fiber handicraft enterprise, hoping to create more job opportunities for women in rural Bangladesh and help them earn a stable income to support their families.

From learning and inspiration on campus to bringing rural women’s handicrafts to a broader international market, Safa gained more than knowledge at SJTU—he found the drive to connect with society and the world. et us listen to Safa’s SJTU moments and discover how education, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility can come together.
