CIU-Centre for Cyprus and Mediterranean Studies has organised a seminar on ‘The Myth of the Liberal World Order’ - 5th March 2019

The Centre for Cyprus and Mediterranean Studies (CYPMED) and the International Relations Department of Cyprus International University (CIU) have organized a seminar titled ‘The Myth of the Liberal World Order’.

The presentation was given by German political scientist Prof. Dr. Carlo Masala, who has been in the island as a guest of the CYPMED. Professor Masala has been a faculty member at the University of Armed Forces in Munich since 2007. Before assuming this post, he had worked as Research Advisor and Deputy Director of the Research Department at the NATO Defense College in Rome for 4 years. His main research interests cover Theories of International Relations, Security Policy, Transatlantic Relations and Security in the Mediterranean.

In his seminar, Prof. Dr. Masala explained what the Liberal World Order is, how it works and analysed the latest international developments within this framework. Prof. Dr. Masala has emphasized that the structure, which was established in the aftermath of the World War II and referred to as Liberal World Order, never had a global character, and never operated in line with the fundamental principles of Liberalism. According to Prof. Dr. Masala, rising nationalism and populism, especially in the United States, and rapid rise of China makes the existing order unsustainable.

The seminar, which was attended by many faculty members as well as postgraduate and PhD students, was concluded with the Q&A session.
