Sand and dust storms are particularly relevant to Cyprus, affecting the air we breathe and potentially our health.

Through the CIROCCO project, our team at EFM-Lab is working to strengthen air-quality monitoring in Cyprus. This short WMO animation explains how dust storms form, how they travel over long distances, and why reliable observations and early warnings matter.

The latest Eurostat estimate for 2025 sends an important warning message for Cyprus’ climate targets.

While the EU economy grew by 17.5% during 2015–2025, total greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 17.2%. In contrast, Cyprus was among the few EU Member States where emissions increased, recording a rise of 10.7% over the same period.

This highlights a critical issue: economic growth alone is not enough. Progress must be aligned with climate action, sustainable development, and the national and European targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In our new blog post, we discuss what these figures mean for Cyprus, why the current trajectory raises concerns, and why stronger, evidence-based policies are needed to accelerate the transition towards a climate-neutral economy.

Through our new blog, we will share updates on our research activities, projects, publications, teaching activities, and scientific contributions.

Our first blog post is dedicated to the EU Project, highlighting our role in the Cyprus pilot on Desert Dust Storm Event Monitoring in Idalion, as well as our contribution to GDPR, Gender Balance and Ethics Management within the project.

Through this platform, we will continue sharing our work in environmental fluid mechanics, air quality, urban microclimates, climate change, public health, and sustainable built and natural environments.

Ξεκινά το ερευνητικό έργο για την έξυπνη και ανθεκτική γεωργία στην Κύπρο🌱

Το έργο AgriProAct (AI-based Agro-Meteorological Decision Support System) ξεκινά τη δραστηριότητά του στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος «AI in Government» του Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας/ Research and Innovation Foundation, με συνολική διάρκεια 24 μηνών.

Το AgriProAct στοχεύει στην ανάπτυξη ενός καινοτόμου, AI-based συστήματος υποστήριξης αποφάσεων για τη γεωργία, το οποίο συνδυάζει δεδομένα από μετεωρολογικούς σταθμούς, δορυφορικές παρατηρήσεις και αισθητήρες εδάφους. Μέσω αυτής της ολοκληρωμένης προσέγγισης, το σύστημα θα παρέχει εξατομικευμένες προβλέψεις και πρακτικές συστάσεις σε επίπεδο αγροτεμαχίου, υποστηρίζοντας τους παραγωγούς στη λήψη έγκαιρων και τεκμηριωμένων αποφάσεων.

🌱 Το έργο έρχεται να αντιμετωπίσει κρίσιμες προκλήσεις της κυπριακής γεωργίας, όπως:
• η λειψυδρία
• τα ακραία καιρικά φαινόμενα
• η αυξανόμενη μεταβλητότητα του κλίματος

🔍 Μέσω προηγμένων μοντέλων πρόγνωσης, το AgriProAct θα προσφέρει:
• βελτιστοποίηση άρδευσης και λίπανσης
• έγκαιρη προειδοποίηση για παγετό, ξηρασία και έντονες βροχοπτώσεις
• μείωση της κατανάλωσης νερού και λιπασμάτων
• περιορισμό των περιβαλλοντικών επιπτώσεων της γεωργίας

📊 Παράλληλα, θα αναπτυχθεί ένα διαδραστικό dashboard για δημόσιες αρχές, το οποίο θα υποστηρίζει την εκτίμηση κινδύνων, την πρόβλεψη αποζημιώσεων και τη λήψη τεκμηριωμένων πολιτικών αποφάσεων, ενισχύοντας τη μετάβαση προς μια πιο προληπτική και data-driven αγροτική πολιτική.

📅 Η εναρκτήρια συνάντηση (kick-off meeting) θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 9 Απριλίου 2026.

Desert dust storms, combined with existing anthropogenic pollution, increasingly degrade air quality, public health, and quality of life in Cyprus, particularly in already burdened areas

Against this backdrop, the 7th CIROCCO Stakeholder Workshop was organized in Idhalium Municipal Cultural Centrer, a EU Horizon project pilot area of the Municipality of South Nicosia –Idaliou (Δήμος Νότιας Λευκωσίας-Ιδαλίου), led by the EFM-Lab of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering - University of Cyprus, bringing together local authorities, scientists, policymakers, and other key stakeholders to discuss challenges, share knowledge, and co-design solutions.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Municipality of South Nicosia– Idaliou, introduced the public to the CIROCCO Project, focusing on the monitoring and modelling of particulate matter originating from desert dust transport as well as anthropogenic activities.

🔹 The workshop opened with a presentation of the CIROCCO project, explaining how natural dust events and human-related emissions interact and impact local air quality.
🔹 Interactive stakeholder group sessions followed, enabling municipal representatives, scientists, policymakers, and citizens to discuss local problems, reflect on project results, and propose practical measures and future actions.
🔹 The event concluded with a collective decision to organise a visit to the Ancient Idalion Archaeological Site, strengthening the link between environmental research, cultural heritage, and the local context.

The workshop highlighted the importance of science–policy–society dialogue in addressing complex air quality challenges and demonstrated how collaborative approaches can support informed decision-making at the local level.
