Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cyprus Official page of the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cyprus. Biology is at the forefront of scientific discovery and public attention.

The recent delineation of the complete genomic information of humans and several other organisms has provided the foundation for unprecedented advances in understanding life at the molecular level. It has also provided new tools and approaches to medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and other disciplines. In addition, the challenge of halting current threats to biodiversity has led to many breakt

hroughs in the way we understand the interactions of organisms with their environment and the important role of biodiversity for humanity. The way Biology is taught, practiced, and understood has been revolutionized through advances in biochemistry, cell and developmental biology and structural biology, genetic manipulations based on molecular biology, as well as through advances in ecology, systematics, evolutionary biology, conservation and management of natural resources. Biology has expanded to create novel fields, beyond its traditional scope, via synergies and interactions with information science, chemistry, physics and engineering. In this framework, Biology has become a driving force of discovery and application in the modern economy and industry (biotechnology, agriculture, aquaculture, medicine, pharmaceuticals, to name a few), and a source of improvements in health and quality of life. The Department accepted its first graduate students in September 2003 and its first undergraduate students in September 2007. The Biology curriculum has been designed to prepare students for employment as well as to enable them to continue their education and research training. The undergraduate Biology program offers students a broad background in basic science and biological principles, which allows for a high degree of flexibility during the junior and senior years of study. The graduate and doctoral programs provide the students with the opportunity to specialize in one of the many fields of Biological Sciences. Our graduates may choose to pursue academic research in biology or work, among others, in clinical laboratories, environmental assessments, science education and government agencies

FUNDED PhD POSITION - STARTING SEPTEMBER 2025

The Epigenetics lab (www.kirmizislab.com) has an available PhD position funded through the European Doctoral Network program NUCLEAR (https://nuclear-dn.eu/). The project will investigate the relationship of cellular metabolism with the epigenome in the context of cancer.

More about the project here: https://nuclear-dn.eu/projects/project15/

Information on how to apply here: https://nuclear-dn.eu/recruitment/

Application deadline: March 17th, 2025

NUCLEAR is providing generous three-year fellowships starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, funded through the DN–Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions call of the European Commission. We are currently seeking 16 highly motivated Doctoral Candidates (DCs) to pursue their PhDs as part of one of the ava...

New study from the Cell ad Developmental Biology laboratory shows that that c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) is involved in ciliogenesis.

Dr. Maria Chatzifrangkeskou just published a new article in the Journal of Cell Biology. Maria, using Xenopus embryos and cultured cells showed that JNK is found at the base of motile and primary cilia, in association with the basal bodies. In multiciliated cells, JNK is involved in ciliogenesis and the ciliary function through the regulation of the actin networks of multiciliated cells and the establishment of the intraflagellar transport-B core complex. JNK is implicated in the development of diabetes, neurodegeneration, and liver disease, all of which have been linked to ciliary dysfunction. This work raises the possibility that the involvement of JNK in disease may in part stem from its role in ciliogenesis and ciliary function.

Postdoctoral research position (Special Scientist) in developmental cell biology at the University of Cyprus

We are inviting applications for a Special Scientist (postdoctoral level) position to work at the Drosophila Development and Homeostasis Laboratory in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus. The researcher will conduct fundamental research on a project funded by the University of Cyprus. Specifically, the work will focus on Glioblastoma angiogenesis using the fruit fly as an experimental model.
