Archaeological Research Unit, UCY - Ερευνητική Μονάδα Αρχαιολογίας, ΠΚ mourns the loss of Ian A. Todd, whose decades of archaeological work on the island transformed our understanding of Cypriot prehistory.

Ian founded and directed the Vasilikos Valley Project in 1976, leading landmark excavations at numerous sites, including the Aceramic Neolithic settlement of Kalavasos-Tenta and, together with Alison South, at the major Late Bronze Age site of Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios. His long-running programme of excavation and survey across the Vasilikos valley remains an essential reference for the archaeology of the island, spanning nine millennia of settlement from the Neolithic to the Roman period.

His legacy lives on in the excavated sites open to the public today, in the volumes that continue to guide research and in the many colleagues and students who worked alongside him in the Vasilikos valley.

In 2023, he was honoured with a festschrift, titled Prehistoric Anatolia and Cyprus: Studies in Honour of Ian A. Todd, a fitting tribute to a scholar who shaped the field for generations.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Alison South-Todd, and the many collaborators whose careers he helped shape.
