SGA - Student Chapter Prague ⚒ Welcome to the page of the Prague Chapter of Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits! ⚒

Official website: http://sga.cuni.cz/

SGA Student Chapter Prague was founded by SGA student members from the Charles University in Prague in spring in 2002. Our specialization is the economic geology, the mineral deposits and the mineralogy and we are interested in everything associated with the mineral deposits, mining and its aspects to the human life and environment. Our task is the organization of lectures, experiences exchange and arranging of the field trips to the mineral deposits

Last week, we had the honor of welcoming Malte Junge, who gave a lecture at the Ústav geochemie, mineralogie a nerostných zdrojů titled “Tiny minerals, big stories: How platinum-group minerals record the history of ore formation.” 🎓✨
Malte Junge has been active in SGA for many years and currently serves as the Academic Advisor for the SGA Student Chapter Erlangen. 🌍
We were very pleased to show him around the Národní muzeum and the faculty’s mineralogical collection. 🏛️💎
After the lecture, we continued our discussions in a more informal setting, where we talked about future joint international SGA activities. 🍻🤝

🏔️ At the end of the last year, the SGA Student Chapter Prague organised another autumn excursion, this time to the Bohemian Paradise and Podkrkonoší regions. The excursion, led by Jan Bubal, took place from November 14 to 16, 2025, and one of its main purposes was to welcome the first-year geology student members of the Prague Chapter 🤗

💎 The first stop was the cooperative of artistic production Granát Turnov, which has been producing original jewellery with Bohemian garnets since 1953. They not only process garnets, but also mine them in shallow open-pit mines in the České středohoří and Podkrkonoší regions 🌋

🪨 Our second stop was a quarry well known for its decorative granite – the Liberec granite. The feldspars vary in colour from pink to green or blue due to changes in their chemical composition. This granite is one of the most iconic and most widely used decorative stones in the Czech Republic 🪦

🇨🇿 We ended the first day with a visit to the Bohemian Paradise Museum. We had the opportunity to walk through an exhibition dedicated to the geology and mineral recourses of the region, an exhibition presenting the systematic mineralogical classification, and a particularly interesting exhibition focused on UV-luminescent materials. In addition to minerals, the collection included synthetic crystals (e.g. REE:YAG) and uranium glass, both produced exclusively in the Czech Republic 🔦

During the field trip, we also visited several smaller quarries and old waste dumps – the last remnants of historical ore mining in the region ⚒️

🤩 This field trip sparked interest among our young student members, further motivating them toward the field of economic geology 🤝

In September, together with members of the SGA Student Baltic Chapter, we went on an unforgettable geological excursion to Scandinavia! ⚒️🇸🇪🇫🇮
Our journey took us from Prague all the way to Kiruna, a Swedish town located 200 km north of the Arctic Circle – in just two weeks, we traveled nearly 7,000 km 🛣️. We had the opportunity to visit world-class mining sites such as the Aitik copper deposit and the Kiruna iron/REE deposit, which rank among the largest and most significant mines not only in Sweden but in all of Europe ⚒️. We also got to see how field mapping is carried out at the Kristineberg copper deposit 🧭. During our visits to active mines, we connected with industry professionals and leading scientists, laying the groundwork for future collaborations and our own career development 📚. The program also included numerous visits to historical mines, important geological and mineralogical sites, and a gemological museum in Finland 💎. An unforgettable highlight was witnessing the Northern Lights – for some of us, it was the very first time ✨🌌. Of course, no Scandinavian experience would be complete without enjoying a traditional sauna beyond the Arctic Circle and tasting local cuisine 🫎.
It was truly an unforgettable expedition that gave us valuable experience, new knowledge, and lasting friendships 🇨🇿🤝🇵🇱🤝🇸🇪.

We presented our research, joined inspiring lessons and plenary talks on ore deposits and critical minerals, built international networks and friendships, and in person explored world-class geology on several field trips. We are grateful to SGA for organizing this incredible meeting and for their continuous support of geology students. Get ready for the 2027 19th SGA Biennial Meeting in Perth, Australia 🦘!
