🌿 Today, FOREE had the pleasure of presenting our blended learning approach and digital learning tools to fellow participants of the SUSFOR project.

The presentation was delivered by Kairit Reiman from our Estonian partner, Luua Forestry School, who is actively involved in both FOREE and SUSFOR — a great example of meaningful cross-project collaboration.
Both projects are funded by Erasmus+, and their synergy brings added value to each other: by sharing practical tools and proven methods across projects, we help strengthen digital competences and promote modern, flexible learning in forestry education worldwide.

🌍 While SUSFOR focuses on African forestry education, the pedagogical models and tools developed in FOREE are adaptable far beyond — contributing to inclusive, future-ready learning environments across borders.
We're proud to work with international partners and to share impactful solutions that support global education. 🌱

Blended teaching: one of the major pain point for education organisations! Identified during the Workshop on Education at this year’s InnovaWood General Assembly, the challenge of effectively combining online and in-person teaching is real. With over 60 education and research experts from across Europe, the discussion made it clear: support, tools, and training are still lacking.

🌳 This is what the FOREE course would look like if it were a forest! 🌳

At the end of last year, forestry educators participated in the FOREE blended learning course in Estonia. As the course concluded, participants were asked to compare their experience to a tree – and the answers were truly inspiring:

🍃 “A freshly sprouted young tree that has the potential to grow strong, given the right care and support.”

🌰 “A hazel tree – growing quickly and intensively, reflecting the fast-paced nature of the course.”

🌳 “A hazel tree again, because while it regenerates rapidly, the root system is ancient. It may not be the same tree, but it is the same organism.”

🍐 “An old, weathered pear tree – I know what’s wrong with it and what needs to be done, but I don’t act or ask for help. It could bear incredibly tasty fruit if harvested at the right time!”

🌲 “An old pine tree viewed from below – tall, straight, and slender for most of its life, eventually becoming lush and full.”

📂 “A catalog tree in a digital environment – each ecosystem and setting connected by its own roots, forming a cohesive whole.”

🪴 “A bonsai tree – old and always present, yet growing naturally and evolving only when necessary.”

These reflections capture the diversity of the course and the participants’ growth, both professionally and personally. Just as in a forest, education thrives when growth is nurtured, and roots are allowed to deepen. Smart blended learning supports this beautifully. 🌟

🌲 Have you ever wondered how forestry education is advanced in Estonia and what innovative solutions are in place at Luua Forestry School? Let’s continue introducing our project partners. 🇪🇪

As Estonia’s only hands-on forestry school, Luua Forestry School has been at the forefront of using digital solutions in forestry education for years, helping us quickly adapt to new challenges. Reflecting Estonia’s image as a digital nation, we have been using simulators for forestry machinery training for over a decade, and e-learning modules are a daily part of our curriculum. 💻

🔑 Key Focus Areas in Estonian Forestry and Forestry Education:
🌍Modern Needs in Estonian Forestry : Climate change and sustainable forest management are central themes.

🖥️Innovation and Digital Learning : Through the FOREE project, we have an excellent opportunity to share our experiences with digital and simulator-based learning, which have been integral to Luua Forestry School for years. Collaboration with international partners expands our knowledge and opens new possibilities for advancing forestry education.

The FOREE project is not only a platform for international exchange but also a driving force that enables us to enhance forestry education more effectively and sustainably. 🔗

🌳 Have you ever wondered who is leading the FOREE project and what’s currently important in forestry education in their country? Let’s start with an introduction to Germany...

🇩🇪 Our FOREE partner, the Forestry Education Center NRW (FBZ) in Arnsberg, is a crucial hub for vocational and further forestry education in North Rhine-Westphalia. Operated by the State Enterprise Wald und Holz NRW, it plays a central role in training the next generation of forestry professionals.

🔑Key Focus Areas:
Forestry Challenges in Germany: Extreme weather events—storms, heatwaves, and droughts—have significantly impacted North Rhine-Westphalia’s forests, worsened by widespread bark beetle infestations. About 75% of the trees show moderate to severe defoliation, making reforestation a high priority. Since 2019, the state has provided over 113 million euros in financial support for forest restoration.

Project Focus: In a traditionally hands-on field like forestry, the shift to blended learning has brought challenges and opportunities. FBZ NRW is eager to use FOREE to enhance digital media and teaching practices, collaborating with forestry education centers across German-speaking regions to share insights and strengthen forestry education.

🌍Through the FOREE project, our partners work together on sustainable solutions to address climate resilience, digital transformation, and more. Stay tuned as we introduce other FOREE countries and their unique forestry perspectives!
