Happy German Tip Tuesday!

If somebody tells you "das interessiert mich nicht die Bohne" he expresses that something does not interest him at all. Already in the 13th century the word bean was used to name something insignificant. The origin of this saying lies in the eating habits of the Middle Ages. Beans were one of people's staple foods, easy to grow and nutritious. However, a single bean did not satisfy anybody and was worth nothing - and therefore uninteresting.

Happy German Tip Tuesday!

The saying "jemanden zwiebeln" (to onion somebody) is a synonym for torturing somebody.
Still in the 16th century, the verb "zwiebeln" was only related to food and simply meant to prepare a dish with onions. The origin of the saying probably lies in the fact that cutting onions is "a torture" as the eyes are irritated and you have to cry.

If someone "riskiert eine dicke Lippe" (risks a thick lip), he says something that can annoy his counterpart. Under certain circumstances the other person may be so angry that you get a punch on your nose - or better said: on your lip.

Happy German Tip Tuesday!

If a person feels very listless and powerless, he "hängt in den Seilen" (hangs in the ropes).
The saying is to be understood figuratively and probably goes back to the equestrian sport in which an exhausted horse lets his head hang down into the harness.

Happy German Tip Tuesday!

The grey hair is the outer sign of age. It is said that you also get grey hair through worries, stress or bad events. Even though this is not scientifically proven, many people believe that you are worried if you let grey hair grow. The saying "sich keine grauen Haare wachsen lassen" (no grey hair can grow) therefore means to lead a carefree life.

Happy German Tip Tuesday!

The German saying that something is "unter aller Sau" (under all sows) originates in the Yiddish expression "Seo" which could be translated to benchmark. So if something is done really badly and not meeting the expectations, it stays far beneath the benchmark. Over time, the expression has changed from "Seo" to "Sau", even though the saying has actually nothing to do with pigs.

Sunny days like these are the perfect opportunity to go out for a walk in one of Augsburg's parks, the Zoo or the "Siebentischwald". And if you need a break for lunch or crave some coffee and cake in the afternoon, we have a recommendation for you: the Waldgaststätte Parkhäusl. It is located in the "Siebentischwald" right next to the Zoo, the Botanical Garden, a playground and a minigolf area. Hence it is the perfect spot to visit on a sunny day with your friends or family!

Happy German Tip Tuesday!

The rather informal expression "schimpfen wie ein Rohrspatz" (scold like a reed bunting) refers to someone who blusters extremely loudly and won't stop, just like a reed bunting. That bird is known for his rather loud and enduring chirping which thus seems similar to human grumbling.

Happy German Tip Tuesday!

If somebody is really shocked or surprised by something that has happened or by someone, he is "aus der Bahn geworfen" (thrown out of the train), meaning thrown off track. This expression does not necessarily relate to a train but rather "Bahn" in the sense of a straight, organized path who could be interrupted by unfortunate events.

January 6 is called Dreikönigstag (Epiphany). On this date the Catholic Church commemorates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ. In adition to that, this holiday celebrates the homage of the child Jesus by the Three Kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.
