“National Internationalism? Nation, Race, and Class in the Soviet Sphere” examined the contradictions of communist internationalism across the USSR and Eastern Europe, focusing on the tensions between ideology and political reality.
Through panels on nationalism, anti-colonialism, race, language, and memory politics, the conference explored how Soviet and socialist regimes claimed to transcend nationalism while often relying on national identities and loyalties to maintain power. Discussions ranged from the Jewish question and foreign student life in Moscow to postwar Poland, Soviet Ukraine, Yugoslavia, and Central Asia.
Organized in cooperation with Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur and Smolny Beyond Borders, the event concluded with an evening conversation at Metis Books and Café featuring Khue Pham and Berit Ebert.
