Today's tip of the week is for all fans of the festive season: the first Christmas market in the Ruhr region opened yesterday. The Christmas markets in Bochum, Essen and the surrounding area traditionally offer a selection of culinary delights and handmade Christmas items, such as Christmas tree decorations or carvings - Not forgetting the mulled wine and eggnog stall, of which there is at least one at every Christmas market. The market in Essen-Steele is open from 11 am to 8 pm. The special feature of this market is the railway village. More information can be found at the following link: https://www1.wdr.de/nachrichten/ruhrgebiet/steele-weihnachtsmarkt-start-100.html
Normally, the Christmas markets are open until Christmas.

For this week's cultural tip, we are in the mood for autumn. During this colourful season, several folk festivals can be visited in and around Bochum. Among them are harvest festivals: Thanksgiving has its origins as a pagan festival, which was then adopted by Christianity. Thanksgiving has therefore been celebrated in Germany for centuries, with different rituals and customs depending on the region. For example, many places celebrate Thanksgiving with parade floats and the burning of a straw doll. Many communities organise small fairs. In Bochum, there is a harvest festival at the weekly market in Bochum Riemke: on 21 October from 9 a.m., the market square will be decorated in autumnal style for its visitors.. It will be accompanied by live music.

To get into the mood for autumn, we recommend planning a nice tour through another quarter of Bochum, the Weitmarer Holz in Bochum Weitmar. This recreation area has an enclosure with wild boars and fallow deer. The area includes Bochum’s biggest forest area – therefore, there is enough space for a lengthy hike through the woods. There are also a few restaurants nearby that may be a good option to relax afterwards.

The Ruhr University Botanical Garden is always worth a visit. With its outdoor exhibition, it is perfect for getting in the mood for autumn. At the moment, under the motto "New Wild Ones - Globalisation in the Plant World", there are numerous information boards presenting invasive plant species. There is also an exhibition in the foyer of the Botanic Garden: "Botanical Jewels from the Amazon" are presented there. These are jewels made by the Satéré-Mawé people.

Admission to the garden is free, but guided tours must be booked in advance, small fees apply. More information can be found here: https://www.boga.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/veranstaltungen/index.html.en

For this week's tip, we say Goodbye to the Summer for this year - Autumn is just around the corner, and so are some popular festivals and markets. As every year, the Fliegenkirmes (a funfair called Fly Fair) takes place in Bochum Stiepel. From Friday, 22 September, to Monday, 25 September, you can visit numerous rides. The Herbstkirmes (Autumn Fair) in Bochum Wattenscheid starts the following weekend: from 29 September to 3 October numerous stalls will offer street food and sweets. If you fancy something quieter, you can visit the potters' market in Bochum Höntrop, if you are interested. Around 50 different potters offer their work there.
