🚀 Building bunkers for science (like Lego)

Static test prep for our N2O oxidizer tank at TU Braunschweig's ZEBRA facility. The concrete walls? Not for aesthetics – nitrous oxide doesn't negotiate.

This setup helped us validate our HYDRA hybrid rocket engine before flight. Because testing on the ground is cheaper than explaining craters to the landlord.

Big thanks to for letting students play with the serious toys.

🚀✨ Inside the heart of our rocket

Meet ICARUS – our custom-built modular flight computer. Those colorful lights? They control the recovery system, collect telemetry data, and ensure our rocket makes it safely back to Earth.

Each board has its own mission: power supply, data transmission, sensors – all stackable and swappable. This lets us iterate and improve fast.

Designed, soldered, and programmed by students. For science. For passion.

Pioneering space manufacturing: With our iLOOP project, we’re pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing in space. In collaboration with IRaS and DLR, we are testing the 3D printing of high-performance thermoplastic PEEK on a mobile conveyor system—an essential step toward in-orbit production. Imagine building spacecraft components directly in space, reducing launch costs and opening up new possibilities for long-term missions. Additionally, our REXUS project takes our scientific experiments to the edge of space, where we test payloads under microgravity conditions. These tests are critical for understanding how materials and electronics behave in space environments.

Introducing UNITY—the flagship project of ERIG. UNITY represents the pinnacle of
student-driven aerospace innovation, featuring a modular rocket family powered by our
scalable hybrid propulsion system, HYDRA. Designed with modularity in mind, UNITY
allows for rapid testing and iteration of key subsystems. While HYDRA is set for comple-
tion in 2026, our test rocket, Phoebe, is already paving the way, equipped with a commercial
solid rocket motor to high-end avionics, structural integrity, and recovery systems. Every
launch brings us one step closer to mastering hybrid propulsion and reaching new heights:
3000 m altitude, flawless recovery, and cutting-edge payload experiments. Stay tuned as
we shape the next chapter of student-led aerospace engineering.

At ERIG, we believe that space exploration is more than just science—it’s about pushing boundaries and exploring the unknown. Founded in the late 1990s, the ExperimentalRaumfahrt-InteressenGemeinschaft (ERIG) at the Technical University of Braunschweig provides students with the opportunity to turn theory into practice. With two dedicated teams—Experimental Rockets and Space Exploration—we’re designing the next generation of space technologies. From modular rocket designs to Mars rover prototypes, our projects are student-driven, technically challenging, and focused on innovation. Join us as we continue to redefine the limits of student-led aerospace innovation.

The European Rover Challenge (ERC) 2023 is getting closer! ✨ The competition will take place from 15th to 17th of September in Kielce, Poland. Recently, we took a trip to a nearby forest to test or locomotion subsystem. Special focus was on our newly designed wheels. The wheels did perform great which makes us confident about our upcoming traverse on the mars yard in Poland! Also, we were happy to see that ORTHOS was able to catch the attention of some bypassing kids inspiring the upcoming generation of engineers. 🔧
