For this week’s , we introduce two new programs that offered places to our third years. The first one takes us, once again, to the UK 🇬🇧. It is called Comparative Government and is taught at the University of Oxford. The second one is taught at a university in the US 🇺🇸. It is the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University.

From now on, the series will feature different programs that the Class of 2022 was accepted into. This can give you an idea about the kind of graduate programs available for IRPH students after their three years at Jacobs.

This week, we introduce three programs of two top London universities, namely King’s College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science. They are as versatile in their studies as the doors open for IRPH students after graduation. One focuses on security politics, one on conflict management and resolution, and the other on environmental policy.

If you want to find out more about the programs, go and check out the programs descriptions on the universities’ websites:

IRPH classes constantly take students outside of their classrooms and into museums where they can have a better approach to what they're studying.

Shortly before Spring Break, Dr. Julia Timpe took her students to the "Deutsches Auswandererhaus" / "German Emigration Center Museum" in Bremerhaven to give them more information on the topic of migration for her class "History of Globalization".

Women's International Conference is an intersectionalist feminist conference who promotes social justice, human rights, and gender equality. Speakers such Antje Grotheer, Lelise Dhugaa, Tawakkol Karman, Susanne von Basewitz, Ute Scholz and more will share their experience as women in politics and IR, international development and humanitarian action, in leadership and work in both NGOs & IOs.

But there's more to a student who wants information in other fields! There will also be speakers with background in business, psychology, STEM & engineering and lastly, big tech, such as Google & Meta. They will share their stories and be opened to any question or networking from your side.

As a conference WIL always had one or more students from the IRPH Faculty in its main organizing team. This year it's Salma El Atassi as Head of Finance and Hersa Bregu as Head of PR.

For this week’s , we hear about Paulinas’ experience in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 .

“Hello, I’m Paulina and I spent my fifth semester abroad at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. I had known since the beginning of my studies that I wanted to go abroad in my third year to see how IRPH is taught at other institutions, to embrace the international characteristics of the programme, and personally grow through the experiences abroad. Edinburgh is a magnificent city with its historic streets and buildings, the beautiful Portobello beach, and the Pentland Hills. I enjoyed my daily walks through the city to get to the different university buildings, meeting my friends in cafés for study sessions, and going on hikes and castle excursions on the weekends. I liked the vast choice of classes that the university offers. Particularly my class in “Foundations in Global Security” was insightful with interesting weekly discussions. I am glad that I chose this university for my fifth semester and I would highly recommend it.”

In the summer of 2021, right after their second year, the UG class of 2022 who will graduate in just a few months, went all around the world to do their mandatory internships. These internships brought many positive aspects to the lives of IRPH students such as the growth of their network, a development of their soft and hard skills, an opportunity to earn money for some students, as well as an opportunity to add more things to their CVs.

Many students could find an internship position in a variety of places such as embassies in foreign countries, ministries in their own countries, as well as different kinds of organizations from international organizations to non-governmental organizations on a smaller scale. Lastly, some students found internships even in business, public relations, communication, marketing, start-ups, and consulting.

This showcases the diversity that an interdisciplinary degree like that of "International Relations: Politics and History" at JUB has when it comes to the career paths that many students will have while studying or after they finish their studies.

This week’s candidate for our series talks about his study abroad experience in the Netherlands 🇳🇱.

“I am Tuguldur Gankhuyag and I have gone to Amsterdam University College (AUC) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Ever since I saw the poster for study abroad in my first year, I decided to push myself for it. It was a completely different experience but if it were to be compared, it felt like I was back in my first year again but this time more wise and relaxed. I had many favourite spots as Amsterdam has such great scenery. But I would say my workplace, a bagel cafe, had the greatest view of Vijzelgracht. Amsterdam is an adventurous city where everybody is friendly and there for a good time. Even though the school gives a lot of work but at the end of the week it is always worth it.”

Contact us if you have more questions about study abroad and stay tuned for next week’s report which takes us to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

For this week’s , we hear about Elias’ experience in France 🇫🇷.

“Hi, I’m Elias. Last semester, I was on exchange at Sciences Po Paris, Campus de Reims in France. From the start of my studies at Jacobs, it was clear to me to pursue a semester abroad. It turned out to allow for personal growth, through the experience of a different culture and language, but it was also valuable to leave the Jacobs bubble for a bit. Encountering a new academic culture, higher education system, and student life puts our world at JUB into perspective. Of course, study abroad is about learning and developing, but it also means enjoying freedom in a new environment, with new friends. This was truly enjoyable for me. I especially liked to hang out or study in the courtyard (see picture) of the Sciences Po campus. In retrospect, I can only advise to take the valuable step of spending a semester abroad. It will be a very intense episode of your student life, but one, you will leave with great memories and maturity.”

After having heard from Mika’s experience in South Korea 🇰🇷, this week, we will hear about Joana’s experience in Spain 🇪🇸.

“My name is Joana, a third-year IRPH student, and I spent my last semester in Córdoba, Spain. I've decided to go abroad to improve my language skills, experience a new university, and have the chance to do something different after two years at Jacobs.
The time in Spain was amazing: fantastic weather (warm and sunny EVERY DAY), experiencing the Spanish way of living, and great roommates. Generally, the people in Spain are very welcoming and always eager to help international students. Córdoba is a beautiful city, with Arab and Roman influences and lots of old stuff to discover. I have countless favourite spots there and thanks to the excellent weather all year long I got to spend most of my time outside on walks, cafés or in parks. A lovely place is the "Alcazar" (attached is a picture).
The university offers courses in English and Spanish, it's a lovely campus with small classrooms, and the professors are very considerate of international students. I can absolutely recommend Córdoba as a study abroad destination, and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!”

Stay tuned for next week, a little hint: next week we will hear about the destination France.

We are back with the series. It will feature a handful of third years summarising their study abroad experience.
The first one is Mika who spent some time in South Korea.

“Hi everyone! My name is Mika and I've spent my fifth semester at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. I chose Yonsei for its prestige and my fascination with East Asian international relations. It was fantastic to gain first-hand insights into the regional politics and experience the different academic tradition in South Korea. Although the workload was generally higher than at Jacobs, the large number of courses available allowed for significant flexibility for specialization. I will miss having a cozy café around each corner where I can meet friends or spend the day studying. I can highly recommend Yonsei University and Seoul to anyone looking to bring a little variation into their student life and life in a modern and vibrant city. Please feel free to talk to me if you're interested!“

If you have any questions about study abroad, you can ask us or contact the students who spent some time at a university that you might go to.

Stay tuned for next week‘s third year!

Students at Jacobs University are always striving to achieve their dreams, including IRPH students who have already walked on some important first steps that will slowly but surely reflect in their future career path. Here is Marzhan Zhailau's story over her summer internship:

"Hi everyone! My name is Marzhan and I have conducted my internship at the embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Republic of Germany, Berlin. The reason behind choosing this type of internship is my childhood dream to become an ambassador and practically understand the essence of diplomatic missions. My impression of an embassy changed tremendously to the more positive side as diplomats and an ambassador serve a great mission to introduce Kazakhstan to Germany and facilitate bilateral relations. I have been assigned to help the Economy department with writing reports on the current foreign policy strategies, researching the current economic developments of Germany and its effect on Kazakhstan, translating the documents(statements, letters) from German and English to Kazakh and Russian languages, and many more. I confirm that this flow of work is, indeed, complex and every day is full of different events, occasions to analyze and it always makes you think of its possible impact on your country.

At the end of an internship period, I have been able to acquire the nature of the diplomatic missions, build a strong network, practice academic writing skills and train important soft skills needed in diplomacy.

It was a wonderful experience for me and if you are keen to work for the Foreign Ministry of your home country, I would recommend, first, to try an internship at the embassy or in the honorary consulates."
