Professor of Measurement and Sensor Technology, TU Chemnitz

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Olfa Kanoun (Senior Member, IEEE) is a Full Professor at Chemnitz University of Technology and a leading figure in impedance spectroscopy, having co-founded the International Workshop on Impedance Spectroscopy (IWIS, 2008) and the IEEE IMS Technical Committee on Impedance Spectroscopy (TC2, 2018). Her research focuses on extracting electrochemical and physical process signatures such as charge transfer, diffusion, and interfacial capacitance from broadband impedance spectra, with applications in battery diagnostics, biomedical sensing, and nanocomposite-based flexible sensors, including their deployment on energy-autonomous wireless platforms. With over 700 publications and an H-index of 49, she is consistently ranked among the global Top 2% of scientists and received the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Technical Award (2022) for pioneering the evolution of impedance spectroscopy from laboratory scale to field sensors.

This lecture covers the fundamentals of impedance measurement for characterizing passive materials. It will explain the electrical properties — primarily of biological and electrochemical objects — and outline the most important methods for measuring them.

👩‍🏫 Speaker: Prof. Uwe Pliquett
Professor at the Institute for Bioprocess and Analytical Measurement Technology, Heiligenstadt, Germany

Prof. Pliquett received his diploma and Dr.-Ing. degree in electronic instrumentation and measurement techniques from the Engineering College Mittweida, Germany. From 1993 to 1996, he was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, Cambridge, working on transdermal drug delivery using pulsed electric fields. He received his habilitation at Bielefeld University in 2000 and joined the Institut für Bioprozess- und Analysenmesstechnik, Heilbad Heiligenstadt, in 2006, where he works on characterization and manipulation of biological material using electrical and optical methods.

We are thrilled to celebrate the successful defense of her doctoral thesis on "Advanced Meshing and Rotating Radial Current Injection Pattern for Enhanced 3D Lung Electrical Impedance Tomography."
Dr. Bader's groundbreaking work advances 3D lung imaging through innovative meshing strategies and novel rotating radial current injection patterns. Her research significantly enhances the spatial resolution and accuracy of electrical impedance tomography for pulmonary monitoring, contributing to improved non-invasive diagnostic capabilities for respiratory diseases and critical care applications.

🎓 Huge congratulations to Dr. Kholoud Hamza🎓
We are thrilled to celebrate the successful defense of her doctoral thesis on "A Self-Start-Up AC/DC Boost Converter for Electromagnetic Energy Harvesting in Wireless Sensor Applications."
Dr. Hamza's groundbreaking work advances fast self-starting capabilities in wireless sensor nodes (WSN), enabling rapid initialization from zero voltage using harvested vibration energy. Her research solves the critical cold-start challenge, allowing WSNs to become operational immediately without pre-charging—a breakthrough for truly autonomous sensor deployment and more sustainable IoT sensors.
